A painting can be authentic and yet forged and a forgery is not always intended to deceive. The line which separates true and false is hazy, so how must it be drawn? The painting is often accompanied by a certificate issued by a well-known expert or is declared authentic by a member of the deceased artist's family. What real value may be attached to any such documents? Did the Flemish Primitives paint on canvas or on sheets of copper? Do their panels have tongue-and-groove joints? What evidence can an x-ray provide? Is the signature authentic or was it affixed later? Is the magnificent head the remains of a sawn panel or was it cut from a large canvas? Is the tavernscene depicting the smoking, drinking or brawling peasants by Brouwer or Joos van Craesbeek or is it simply a 19th-century imitation? What about the crackle? To what extent may natural sciences contribute and what kind of guarantee can the laboratory offer? This book attempts to give careful answers to these questions.
