Abstract

The parallel computer is one of the newest and most revolutionary innovations in computer science. This volume traces the development of parallelism in large-scale computers and explains the main principles of pipelined and array-like machines, introducing at the same time a novel structural notation for the classification of all computer architectures. Several current designs (the CRAY 1, CDC CYBER 205, FBS AP-120B, ICL DAP and Burroughs BSP) are analysed in detail and their performances on a number of applications such as Poisson-solving, FFT and matrix operations are compared using a two-parameter characterisation. The full exploitation of such highly parallel architectures is only achieved if associated parallel software is implemented. The reader is therefore guided in the design and selection of numerical algorithms that Execute efficiently on particular machines, and in the coding of these algorithms in FORTRAN-like languages best suited to expressing these parallel constructs. Finally, possible future architectural developments are discussed, with particular reference to the impact of VLSI technology. The book was conceived as a teaching text for advanced undergraduate and postgraduate students, but will be equally useful as handbook for research workers, machine designers and programmers concerned with parallel computers, and as a guide for potential users of such machines, especially in disciplines where large amounts of computer time are regularly used.
