Abstract

The most attractive, compelling, and impressive element of Japanese architecture is the roof. Its elegant proportions and subtle curves create a gently sloping link between heaven and earth : firmly set upon beams, pillars, and foundation stones securely anchored in the ground, the Japanese roof seems, paradoxically, to hover grace-fully in midair.
