A first reaction on seeing this book was a slight sinking feeling that here was yet another book covering the same old themes on planning, policies and urban development. Of late there has been a spate of these, many of them offering very little of positive prescriptive nature. It was, therefore, satisfying, having taken time to read the book objectively, to have a text which seemed to fill a particular gap in the field which until now was obviously lacking but due to the very spurious nature of many aspects of the planning process, one which was rather difficult to define.al questions in the book are on what kinds of city and what patterns of urban development will provide better opportunities and living conditions for manual workers in general, and for the most vulnerable people in partic.
