Les neuf auteurs étudiés ici, ont été les prophètes de la sensibilité d'aujourd'hui, quant à la libération de l'amour. Surtout, ils montrent la possible fusion de deux exigences apparemment contradictoires : l'amour unique et le libertinage. Restif de La Bretonne, Nerciat, Sade, Laclos, sont les plus grands écrivains libertins de la littérature mondiale. Mais ils ont prêté, au libertinage, la qualité sublime de l'amour unique. Fourier et Enfantin ont mis l'économie politique et la religion au service de l'amour. Maria de Naglowska préconisa un sacerdoce érotique féminin. André Breton a célébré « l'amour fou », qui incorpore les tentations du libertinage. Georges Bataille a tiré de la mystique occidentale l'équivalent du taoïsme.
