This volume is intended as a study of small rural houses throughout England, tracing their history fomr the Middle Ages tot the 19th century. It covers all the major aspects of vernacular architecture from house-plans and construction methods to the influence of the homes of the great upon smaller dwellings. The rich variety of regional qualities is emphasised, but these are set within an overall framework and related to the differing pace and intensity of historical change in various parts of the country.
