Abstract

The failure of many architectural projects to encourage desired user behavior has led design professionals to explore other disciplines—specifically psychology and sociology—in order to improve their designs. Because architecture encompasses a myriad of concerns and the social sciences address behavior at a variety of levels in numerous ways, architects and designers face a complex task in selecting and applying the behavioral research methods most appropriate for a particular project. "Methods in Environmental and Behavioral Research" helps eliminate some of the confusion, guiding design professionals through the maze of behavioral research methods and demonstrating how these methods can be applied to specific areas of environmental design. The book opens with an examination of methods of research. Included are discussions of observation, surveys, paper-and-pencil tests and scales, games, simulation, research on behavior settings, and time-budget and time-geography studies. These methods are defined and analyzed with regard to advantages and disadvantages, appropriate scale of application, and cautions about their use. Dozens of sample research forms and charts illustrate how these various methods are carried out. The second part of the book turns to particular applications of the research methods just discussed. It demonstrates how research can be applied to particular phases of the design process, such as programming and post-occupancy evaluation; to user groups with special needs, such as children and the elderly; and to environmental areas that require sensitive handling such as natural landscapes. Sample studies of these various applications are included with the discussions. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2012 APA, all rights reserved).
