Son muchas las definiciones que se han propuesto sobre lo que debe considerarse como ciencia, pero todas coinciden en que el conocimiento científico debe ser acumulativo. El propósito de este trabajo es volver a analizar un caso aparente de acumulación teórica en sociología que casi se puede considerar institucionalizado por quienes se dedican al estudio de las organizaciones; se trata de la hipótesis según la cual el creciemito en las organizaciones formales da lugar a un incremento de su grado de diferenciación estructural que definiríamos provisonalmente como "división entre partes estructurales funcionalmente distintas".
