Abstract

This comprehensive handbook details step-by-step techniques for developing and producing family planning messages for radio and gives sample scripts from 18 countries in the developing world. Tables of radio ownership (included) show that developing nations have almost as many battery-operated transistor radios as developed countries. This medium is particularly valuable because it bypasses the need for literacy and is highly regarded as an entertainment medium. To be effective, the radio compaign needs to be part of a total multimedia campaign. Preaching and speeches by national leaders should be avoided. Instead spot announcements, soap operas, listener participation programs, documentaries, and music programs should be used. Family planning is a new idea and should be encased in entertainment or fold mediums to make it familiar. General writing and production suggestions are given along with techniques for knowing the listener. It is suggested that corporations who use radio, such as manufacturers of soft drinks, razor blades, hand soap, and margarine, be approached to help. These companies have done market research and give valuable aid. A listener-reaction survey form is included.
