Abstract

Originally published in Munich in 1912, The Blaue Reiter Almanac is now what Klaus Lankheit, one of the period's leading scholars, calls "one of the most urgently required works of literature on art theory and culture" in the twentieth century.

Edited by two young painters concerned with the dissemination of information and illustrations of modern art in a world mostly hostile to it, this anthology of essays by leading artists and musicians of the day and reproductions of many kinds of art provided a common spiritual basis for European members of the Blaue Reiter movement to seek an expansion of the traditional boundaries of artistic expression -- in Wassily Kandinsky's words, "... to tear down the walls between the arts" and create a total, international synthesis of culture.
