Abstract

A preëminent historian of religions, Mircea Eliade has concerned himself for many years with the meaning and structure of various aspects of religious phenomena. Evident throughout his varied writings is a continuing effort to delineate the multidimensional character of "myths and symbols" as specific forms of the religious perception of mankind. Appropriately, more than thirty of Professor Eliade's friends and colleagues have chosen to celebrate his sixtieth birthday by contributing original essays on myths and symbols to this volume dedicated to his honor. The contributors, well-known scholars from all over the world, include such figures as Giuseppe Tucci (Rome), Gershom Scholem (Jerusalem), Georges Dumézil (Paris), Ernst Jünger (Wilflingen), and E. M. Cioran (Paris). The volume is divided into three sections : phenomenological and methodological studies ; historical studies ; and literary studies. The latter section contains several essays which deal with Professor Eliade as novelist, another facet of the career of this eminent scholar. Also included is a short account of Eliade's life, as well as a complete bibliography of his works in many languages. "Myths and symbols" is not only an intriguing introduction to Mircea Eliade's thought, it is also a significant contribution to the fascinating study of myths and symbols - a subjet now widely discussed by scholars of philosophy, theology, history of religions, and the social sciences.
