Abstract

The papers brought together in this volume bear witness to the growing vigour and diversity of eighteenth-century studies. The seminar at which they were presented was held to honour the memory of a literary scholar, David Nichol Smith. It is therefore understandable and fitting that the majority of the contributions should be concerned primarily with literature. History, art, and philosophy, however, are also dealt with; and the collection as a whole offers a widely ranging and illuminating survey of the period.

Abstract

Dr Leavis's Selection from Scrutiny gives in two volumes important material which is not easily available elsewhere. Though many well-known books have already been derived from Scrutiny, these two volumes do not duplicate material in those books, and they give a great deal of otherwise uncollected material by Dr & Mrs Leavis themselves. The selection concentrates on English literature and literary criticism, and also reflects Scrutiny's success, from the 1930s to the 1950s, in commenting on the important writers of the time. Volume I begins with a collection of studies by Mrs Q. D. Leavis on academic traditions. There follows a section of studies of T. S. Eliot, Yeats, Pound, and more recent poets. Two sections on 'Literary Culture' and 'The Literary World' comment on minor writers and on literary life and institutions (including Dr Leavis's celebrated 'Keynes, Spender and Currency Values').

Abstract

The Critical Heritage gathers together a large body of critical sources on major figures in literature. Each volume presents contemporary responses to a writer's work, enabling student and researcher to read the material themselves.

Abstract

The journal of the Modern Language Association's American Literature Division I, Early American Literature publishes the finest work of scholars examining American literature from its inception through the early national period, about 1830. Founded in 1965, EAL invites work treating Native American traditional expressions, colonial Ibero-American literature from North America, colonial American Francophone writings, Dutch colonial, and German American colonial literature as well as writings in English from British America and the US. Published three times a year, each issue typically includes four or five articles, the same number of book reviews, and a review essay. Occasionally editions of previously unpublished works appear.
