This work is the only comprehensive survey of sculpture in Britain from the Reformation to the accession of Queen Victoria. It is most revealing for the light it throws on english taste. The family tomb, like the family portrait, has played a part of great importance in the history of english art, and since such monuments are scattered all over the country, many of them are all but unknown. After the tomb, the portrait bust was the form of sculpture most favoured in Britain, and in this field many notable achievements will be found among the more than three hundred illustrations, many of them specially taken for this book. For the second edition, the notes and bibliography have been greatly amplified in the process of bringing the volume completely up to date.
