Abstract

This volume provides the permanent record of the Technical Program of the 1963 Fall Joint Computer Conference. In organizing the program, specific attention was directed toward providing a broad cross-section of material which covered all aspects of the field and reversing the trend toward concentration on software apparent in the past few Conferences. The accomplishment of this goal is exhibited by the large number of papers contained herein, encompassing hardware, software, systems, and applications. In addition, a group of papers presents specific proposals for the application of computers to important social problems. The volume contains the full text of the 55 papers, selected for presentation and discussion at the Conference. It represents the culmination of much hard work by many people---in particular, the authors, to whom we are indeed grateful for their contributions; the Technical Program Committee, session chairmen, panelists, and reviewers who put together the program; and the entire Conference Committee whose untiring efforts made the Conference possible.

Abstract

This volume contains the full text of the thirty-seven technical papers selected for presentation and discussion at the 1963 Spring Joint Computer Conference. It also includes a summary of one of the special panel discussions. Thus it provides a permanent record of the more formal side of the Conference. The material herein represents a broad cross-section of activity in computer and information-processing technology, as of early 1963. In organizing the program for the Conference, general areas of interest were tentatively established for each session, and these were used as guides in selecting and grouping papers. On the whole, however, no real constraints were imposed as to subject matter.Indicative of the scope are three papers devoted specifically to critical analyses of the current state-of-the-art. In other papers, the subjects discussed range from basic concepts to practical applications, in both hardware and software, reflecting the ever-broadening impact of information processing on modern society. This volume is the product of much hard work on the part of the authors who prepared the individual papers. We are indeed grateful for these contributions---clearly the backbone of any highly technical Conference such as this. It is also a pleasure to acknowledge the contributions of the many others---well over a hundred---who helped organize the Conference and who participated as session chairmen, panel moderators, panelists, and reviewers.

Abstract

"This is a complete presentation of all important theoretical and experimental work done on low-density codes. Low-density coding is one of the three techniques thus far developed for efficient communication over noisy channels with an arbitrarily low probability of error. A principal result of information theory is that if properly coded information is transmitted over a noisy channel at a rate below channel capacity, the probability of error can be made to approach zero exponentially with the code length. Any practical use of this theorem, however, requires a coding scheme in which the cost of storage and computation equipment grows slowly with code length. The present book analyzes a class of coding schemes for which costs grow approximately linearly with code length. It demonstrates that error probability approaches zero exponentially with a root of the block length and cites experimental evidence that this coding scheme has profitable applicability in many communications situations."
