Creative Analysis may properly be classified as a book about words. Yet it is more. It is a book about how to use words to solve problems. Though it will probably find its main use in colleges and high schools, it is a flexible device which may be utilized with good results by other institutions (such as industrial organizations) as well as by the individual. In secondary and higher education today, English departments place major emphasis upon language as a means of communication and as an instrument of art. The study of words as tools of thought is largely neglected. Definition, analysis, and other problem-solving areas take a back seat to grammar, composition, and literature. We do not wish to imply that the language functions of art and communication are given too great emphasis. In today's dynamic and often perplexing society these disciplines are of vital importance and their study should remain undiminished. Our contention is simply that the study of words as problem-solving tools should not be neglected. This important area of language usage deserves a prominent place in the education of every literate human being. As a book intended to present the facts of language life, as they bear upon problem-solving, in an understandable and useful manner, Creative Analysis is made up of textual sections, which present and explain principles, and exercise sections, which provide problems in which the principles may be put to use. In many of the exercise sections the problems are graded according to difficulty. The beginning exercises are easy enough for an average high school student to solve; many of the final ones are difficult enough to challenge the best efforts of a superior college graduate. This "easy-to-hard" characteristic makes Creative Analysis a useful book for people of a wide range of abilities. Each learner tends to reach his own level--the point at which the exercises cease to be easy. As he progresses into the difficult range (for him), he extends his ability beyond its previous mark and thus increases the practical value of the principles he has studied. It is in the exercise sections that the important learning takes place, for Creative Analysis is primarily concerned with abilities rather than knowledge.
