Abstract

During his six-year incumbency as director of the Yambio research station in the Anglo-Egyptian Sudan (in present day South Sudan), Pierre de Schlippe (1904 - 1960) conducted groundbreaking ethnological and agronomic research among the Zande community. He was among the first agronomists to recognize the complex and systematic structure of traditional agricultural systems and rural economies generally. His work illustrates the intimate relationship between human culture and the ecosystems in which they evolve, while highlighting the need for development practitioners and government ministries to carefully consider traditional norms and customs when pursuing the adoption of improved crops, cultivars or farming systems.
