"In the five years since the appearance of the last edition of this book the literature concerning projective diagnostic methods has increased enormously. Many new, challenging, and imaginative procedures have been developed for measuring latent and manifest characteristics of personality by situations which give opportunity for free structuring of stimulus patterns. Efforts have been made to standardize these techniques, make them available to public inspection and evaluation, increase their reliability, and demonstrate their validity. These tasks are of great difficulty and are far from completion. Throughout all this advance in a complex area, the Rorschach test has easily held its position as the most popular and the most minutely studied of all projective methods. It is generally believed that it still is the most rewarding way to measure the organizational patterns of personality. Among the standard works on this technique, Beck's book has maintained its eminence, if the large number of favorable references to it in the literature constitute an objective index. Previously Beck has described a scoring system that arises from his personality theory and is more than a mere logical method for cataloguing responses. He has also demonstrated that it is possible to illustrate in detail his utilization of the Rorschach test, so making it public and teachable, without sacrificing the trenchant character of his clinical insights. Thus he has disproved a favorite contention of certain intuitionists concerning the essential incommunicability of their skills. Now, in this edition, he presents as an important new contribution the results of the statistical data which he has accumulated in an effort toward standardization of the test. These norms, for different age, educational, and socioeconomic levels, represent an important advance in the application of quantitative method to projective testing. They will materially aid the clinician in adjusting the findings from an individual test to the patient's particular status, something he has done in the past largely on the basis of accumulated experience and subjective feeling. This useful volume reveals clearly the rapid pace at which research is moving to manufacture, from the imaginative creativity of a few years ago, a dependable and scientific psychodiagnostic instrument. The exposition in this volume will be seen as still following Rorschach in his essentials. One totally new symbol appears, T, for the texture-dictated association. The Z factor has received study and comment from other writers. I continue to use it. No statistical basis for Rorschach's Original has come to my notice. I still do not use this scoring, although I take due notice of all that is qualitatively unique in the content of any association"--Preface.
