The present symposium is, to our knowledge, the first attempt to present a general review of therapeutic failures with different psychiatric methods of treatment. It is obvious that successful cases are easy to report and the hesitancy to do similarly with unsuccessful ones is understandable. But to admit failures is a sign of intellectual and emotional maturity. Psychiatry is young as a science, battling against great handicaps because of inexact methodology as compared with the exact sciences. Nevertheless, it has amassed a large body of knowledge and has today a secure place in medical therapeusis. It is mature enough to admit failures and to analyze their origins. We believe, therefore, that the present volume will contribute to the better understanding of the theory and praxis of psychiatric treatment.

This book was planned and written to aid physicians in detecting and managing the underlying psychological factors which are masked by functional disturbances. To facilitate the physician's task, this study of the neuroses is organized into diagnosis, etiology and therapy. Although the clinical applications of certain psychoanalytic principles are presented, a highly detailed description of the more abstract theories has been omitted. A minimum of psychoanalytic terminology has been employed and is defined. The point of view throughout is psychosomatic. The therapy described is brief and dynamic. The problem of neurosis is approached from three angles: the physician's, the psychotherapist's and the patient's. A glossary is included for those patients whom the physician feels would benefit by some understanding of the causes, dynamics and treatment of their neurotic disturbances and concomitant functional disorders. In spite of the vast library which already exists on the neuroses, another volume which aims to fulfill these needs seems warranted, particularly if it serves its intended purpose of practical, ready reference.
