"Ceaseless and resistless advance in scientific research is a striking characteristic of our time. This is true in all departments of knowledge; in psychology, in sociology and in religion, as well as among atoms and constellations. Strangely enough, the practice of the Art of research has now far outrun popular understanding of the Science. Fogs raised by John Stuart Mill still hang about the theory. There is sore need of a clear exposition of the few simple but profound principles that lie at the basis of all scientific reasoning. To meet this need the present volume is offered in the belief that it presents a comprehensive and consistent analysis of all the various steps in the inductive process and that it will be found particularly illuminating in its treatment of the many different senses of the very ambiguous word "Cause"--
