Abstract

It is the purpose of this book to assemble social psychology information with reference to girls and to present it and the experiences of the writers in nontechnical language in the attempt to give both a point of view and the present status of information on girls. Such discussions seem particularly pertinent at this time. Religious education in the church and character education in the public schools are no longer satisfied, in the one case, with doctrines and creeds and, in the other, with superficial character traits. The molding of personality and character must go deeper than word-of-mouth repetitions of creeds or virtues. To be a secure possession of the adolescent or youth, goodness must be more than unthinking adherence to rules of conduct taught in the classroom. The material in this book is presented in practical and concrete form rather than as abstract theories. The book is not primarily intended as curriculum material which can be used in teaching classes of girls. It is intended as background material for ministers, religious educators, teachers, and those in charge of dubs or connected with girls' organizations who may feel the need for a brief summary of the social psychology of later adolescence. The book is arranged with questions and references at the end of each chapter. Excerpts from case studies and from narratives written by young people are included as illustrative material.

Abstract

"This book is a continuation of the subject of mental hygiene to which an introductory volume, The Normal Mind, published in 1924, was devoted. The central conception of the former book was integration and the conditions favorable to its maintenance. Naturally the basic principles of the present volume are the same, the preservation and development of an integrated personality. The studies during the last seven years, however, have made possible an extended addition to the former work with a broader conception and a wider application of these principles. The purpose of the present volume, however, is not to present a complete account of personality, but to emphasize some facts important for mental health, to give examples of suggestive investigations, to show the great opportunity for valuable observation and study, and to give helpful illustrations of the fundamental conception of integration in the development of personality. The book is an attempt to present the scientific conception of the normal integrated personality, the conditions that seem favorable to its wholesome development, and also some of the conditions likely to produce personality disorders. It is positive, dynamic, constructive. It emphasizes the normal rather than the pathological, the prevention rather than the cure of mental disorder. Its hygienic dependence is on normal function, the normal expression of human impulses, coordinated purposive activity, worthwhile tasks, the acquisition of wholesome interests, right adjustment of work and rest, attention to the present situation, and habitual response of the whole personality"--Preface. Abstract

"Personality has many facets which may gleam and fade, scintillate and darkle, in bewildering fashion, until all semblance of unity vanishes and every facet seems a separate gem. And yet it has a single plan of structure, one general configuration, which may embrace all the changing phases and interrelated aspects. This book attempts an analysis and description of these phases and aspects, depicts some of the typical arrangements of patterns in the total configuration, and traces the development of personality as the organization grows in response to inner forces and outer conditions. The account is scientific rather than ethical or metaphysical. The purpose has been to describe and explain the various aspects and types of personality without moral evaluation or ascription of ulterior meaning. This aim was easy to achieve in the purely analytical study of intellect, temperament and character. But in the description of individual differences in personality as a whole, it became more difficult to avoid coloring that account with personal bias. In spite of the effort to be wholly impartial and objective, the very words chosen may have been determined by deep-seated feelings and prejudices. The reader may therefore sense the author's preferences and aversions in the description of unbalanced and developmental types; but this should not blind him to the fact that such types exist, though they might be delineated in congruity with a different emotional bias"--Preface.
