"Many years of work on the problems of childhood has shown the author what a large proportion of children become mentally and morally malformed as the result of mistreatment by their parents or teachers. Often these parents as well as the teachers are intelligent and well educated. Their error comes from a false theory, or they act impulsively. They do not realize the lasting effects of certain attitudes toward children, or the result of certain kinds of treatment. This preface would be longer than the book if we attempted to give illustrations and cite instances. We must content ourselves with a single type but we will take the type that is perhaps accountable for more harm to childhood and consequently to the coming generation than any other, possibly than all others combined. It is the idea of badness. The child who makes mistakes and does wrong things is considered "bad" and at once labeled "bad." There is no need of any further inquiry or attempt to explain the child's actions. Thus, a fundamental misunderstanding begins, and all the evils of the category may follow. The heroine, if we may call her such, of this book, was never considered "bad," but she was continually misunderstood and mistreated. Behavior that was the direct result of her physical condition was treated as a character trait and as such regarded as uncorrectable. Whereas, a true understanding of her condition would have removed all of the causes in the beginning and saved all of the resultant experiences. It is the hope of the author that many who read this book will get the point and thus something will be started which will hasten the day when children will be understood and when neither parents nor teachers will believe that any child does wrong simply because he is "bad"--Preface. Within recent years there has sprung up a movement in our public schools for greater attention to the process of character building. Although this aspect of education has always held a prominent place in parochial and religious school administration, the same has not been true in like degree of the public schools. This movement, therefore, is of no little significance, for indirectly, at least, it is a tacit admission of the part which the will plays in the educative process, since character is largely the result of individual self-assertion, of strength of will.

"This book neither purports to be an exhaustive account of the psychology of the child and of the relation between parents and children, nor does it aim at setting forth only the individual opinions of the author on these two subjects. It is intended to be an examination of them from the point of view which has recently been developed in psychology by that branch of it known as psycho-analysis, and sets forth the conclusions which have been reached by many investigators and which are deemed of importance in illuminating the subject in hand, namely, the mental hygiene of childhood. In presenting this subject of the mental hygiene of childhood I have believed that the best purpose would be served by emphasizing two conclusions, one concerning the child and one concerning the family. The conclusion concerning the child is that, contrary to generally held opinions, it is possessed of a developing sexuality, the roots of which reach back into its infancy. The conclusion concerning the family is also contrary to the opinions regarding that institution commonly held, namely, that there reside within its organization and as a part of its nature certain disruptive tendencies. I have felt that the recognition of these two facts was of the very first importance and have tried to set them forth in a way that would not only help to their understanding, but would also indicate how their recognition, and the incorporation of that recognition as a factor in regulating the life of the child, would be productive of far-reaching results to the advantage of the race. If this book serves its purpose in securing a hearing for these views, the reader may naturally feel a desire to pursue the subject further. I would suggest to such a reader the few works to which reference is made in the footnotes"--Preface. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2006 APA, all rights reserved).
