"The story purports to have been handed in manuscript form to the narrator, and is left unfinished. It concerns a family living wild in a forest in the southern Alps, reputedly brother and sister with their offspring. It recounts the attempt of a young priest to bring the couple into the fold of the faithful. Instead the priest succumbs to the temptations of the flesh. The document breaks off, and the narrator describes an encounter in the forest with a young woman with a child.
