Abstract

Title in English: Sokol Brno I 1862-1938: History of the elite Moravian association The monograph deals with the formation and evolution of the oldest Sokol association in Moravia. It describes the difficult beginnings of the incipient Sokol movement in a Germanised environment where disputes and animosities hindered development of the Czech gymnastics movement. The resulting picture is much more complex than the general public knows. The author analyses the importance and role of gymnastics and sports in Czech national emancipation. The book covers the period from the 1860s to 1938. In her text, the author also offers a glimpse into the social, ideological and political developments in Brno - known then as the "Moravian Manchester" - in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The book contains photographs and citations from contemporary sources.

Abstract

Electrifying athletes like Olga Korbut and Nadia Comaneci helped make women's artistic gymnastics one of the most popular events in the Olympic Games. But the transition of gymnastics from a women's sport to a girl's sport in the 1970s also laid the foundation for a system of emotional, physical, and sexual abuse of gymnasts around the world. Georgia Cervin offers a history of women's gymnastics, examining how the high-stakes diplomatic rivalry of the Cold War created a breeding ground for exploitation. Yet, a surprising spirit of international collaboration arose to decide the social values and image of femininity demonstrated by the sport. Cervin also charts the changes in style, equipment, training, and participants that transformed the sport, as explosive athleticism replaced balletic grace and gymnastics dominance shifted from East to West.

Abstract

Every five years from 1955 to 1985, mass Czechoslovak gymnastic demonstrations and sporting parades called Spartakiads were held to mark the 1945 liberation of Czechoslovakia. Involving hundreds of thousands of male and female performers of all ages and held in the world's largest stadium-a space built expressly for this purpose-the synchronized and unified movements of the Czech citizenry embodied, quite literally, the idealized Socialist people: a powerful yet pliant force directed by the regime. This book explores the political, social, and aesthetic dimensions of these mass physical demonstrations, with a particular focus on their roots in the völkisch nationalism of the German Turner movement and the Czech Sokol gymnastic tradition. Featuring an abundance of photographs, Spartakiads takes a new approach to Communist history by opening a window onto the mentality and mundanity behind the Iron Curtain.

Abstract

This third edition of Teaching Children Gymnastics will help you tailor a gymnastics program to your teaching situation while combining the best facets of developmental skills, health-related fitness, and conceptual learning based on process characteristics of body, space, effort, and relationships. Internationally renowned author and educator Peter Werner and coauthors Lori Williams and Tina Hall guide you through the process of teaching gymnastics skills and then linking those skills into sequences. Having conducted workshops at all levels, the three authors combine decades' worth of gymnastics knowledge and teaching experience. In this book, they offer updated and new material, including a chapter on designing gymnastics sequences; sections on behavior management, inclusion, and advocacy; information on scope and sequence for grades K to 5; information based on revised national standards, assessment, and designing of gymnastics sequences; and additional learning experiences, plus ideas for creating more learning experiences.
