Abstract

The introduction of the Mercedes-Benz Production System (MPS) is exemplary of a trend within the automotive industry: the creation and introduction of company-specific standardised production systems. This book contributes to the debate about production systems by examining the social and economic implications of the role of standardisation in production systems. In this context it addresses three core issues: First, the driving forces behind the changing forms and functions of standardisation and the role of institutions therein. Second, the impact of standardisation on the evolution of automotive production systems. Third, based on the author's own empirical research conducted over a three year period at the Mercedes-Benz plant Stuttgart-Untertürkheim/Germany, the book examines the influence of standardisation on the work of actors on the shop floor in terms of organisational learning processes and the regulation of work.

Abstract

Modern literature has heralded the "Era of Network Competition" in which cooperating networks and not individual firms seek to attain competitive advantages. Supply chains in the automotive industry provide a good example of such cooperative environments which are characterized by a division of labor and where almost no final product is produced and sold by just one company alone. Luis Martín Díaz shows why some companies are still reluctant to cooperate with partners in the supply chain even though it may be advantageous to them. Based on both an extensive survey within the European automotive industry and a comprehensive case study of the Audi AG corporation, he proposes solutions to this paradox and describes a prototype for the assessment of the added-value of cooperation. His evaluation of the benefits of cooperative planning is a significant contribution to the process of designing collaborative planning activities in supply chains.

Abstract

Advances in automotive control systems continue to enhance safety and comfort and to reduce fuel consumption and emissions. Reflecting the trend to optimization through integrative approaches for engine, driveline and vehicle control, this book enables control engineers to understand engine and vehicle models necessary for controller design and also introduces mechanical engineers to vehicle-specific signal processing and automatic control. The emphasis on measurement, comparisons between performance and modelling, and realistic examples derive from the authors' industrial experience at Bosch and interactions within IFAC and SAE. The second edition offers new or expanded topics such as diesel-engine modelling, diagnosis and anti-jerking control, and vehicle modelling and parameter estimation. The book addresses professional engineers as well as students. With only a few exceptions, the approaches are close to those utilized in actual vehicles, rather than being purely theoretical.

Abstract

The global automotive industry is currently undergoing significant changes and the companies are not only faced with opportunities, but also with new risks. Traditional automotive industry giants are fighting to maintain their market share and their profitability, and at the same time Asian automotive companies are increasing their share of the market and their profitability at high rates. Motivated by the situation in practice and by the Toyota development process, Daniel Sörensen examines the question of how much to invest in pursuing more than one design alternative in parallel within the product development process. He develops a real options model capable of modeling and valuing in monetary terms the effects of interproject correlation coefficients and volatilities in order to compute the optimal number of design alternatives to develop in parallel. Based upon economic theory, he presents five principles in order to value-maximize the product development process.

Abstract

For any product development process, the key question is which factors guarantee the product's success in the market. The book discusses the critical factors for success in automotive development, from product strategy through all phases of development to series production, and characterizes the roles and activities of all partners involved. It is a comprehensive, practically oriented compilation of motor vehicle development, focusing on the complete vehicle integration processes as the orchestration of all activities required to strategically plan and implement the customer relevant characteristics of the complete product. The book covers central subjects such as building and testing of virtual cars, systems integration, project management or supplier integration; and offers a variety of examples and pictures from real-life vehicle development and gives the reader a very realistic insight into the complex world of vehicle development projects.

Abstract

In the engine development process, simulation and predictive programs have continuously gained in reliance. Due to the complexity of future internal combustion engines the application of simulation programs towards a reliable virtual engine development is a need that represents one of the greatest challenges. Marco Chiodi presents an innovative 3D-CFD-tool, exclusively dedicated and optimized for the simulation of internal combustion engines. Thanks to improved or newly developed 3D-CFD-models for the description of engine processes, this tool ensures an efficient and reliable calculation also by using coarse 3D-CFD-meshes. Based on this approach the CPU-time can be reduced up to a factor 100 in comparison to traditional 3D-CFD-simulations. In addition an integrated and automatic evaluation tool establishes a comprehensive analysis of the relevant engine parameters. Due to the capability of a reliable virtual development of full-engines, this fast response 3D-CFD-tool makes a major contribution to the engine development process. Abstract

Even though most vehicular IT systems are indeed developed to face technical failures, they rarely consider a systematic malicious encroachment. However, in the degree that vehicular electronics are becoming software-driven, digitally networked and interactive IT systems, dependable security measures are essential to ensure driving safety and enable the automotive industry to achieve different legal requirements. Marko Wolf provides a comprehensive overview of the emerging area of vehicular security. Having identified potential threats, attacks, and attackers for current and future vehicular IT applications, the author presents practical security measures to meet the identified security requirements efficiently and dependably. The suggested implementations can contribute to ensure driving safety and protect the liability, the revenues, and the expertise of vehicle manufacturers and suppliers.

Abstract

As a result of economic and structural changes, the automotive supply industry has been facing significant consolidation activity over the last twenty years. The pressure to produce better equipped and less expensive automobiles has created a growing trend towards specialization and internationalization. Mergers and acquisitions (M&A) are now considered as a common strategic response to this trend. Based on a sample of 230 M&A between 1981 and 2007, Jan-Peer Laabs challenges the short-term return behavior of acquirers in this industry in contrast to their long-term performance based on capital market and financial accounting information. For this purpose, he combines the two most advanced and updated capital market methodologies with a thorough analysis of published accounting information. A clearly negative yet consistent perspective on the long-term value creation potential emerges across the different empirical analyses. Over the three years following M&A transactions, acquirers appear to lose significant value. However, an additional case study on the takeover of Siemens VDO by Continental AG offers a number of valuable key success factors and insights on how to evade the negative return destiny.

Abstract

Looking back when the International Forum on Advanced Microsystems for Automotive Application (AMAA) started, enormous progress has been made in reducing casualties, emissions and in increasing comfort and performance. Microsystems in many cases provided the key functions for this progress. Although the issues the event concentrated on didn't change significantly (safety, powertrain, comfort, etc.), considerable shifts of technological paradigms and approaches can be stated. The future of microsystems will consist of integrated smart systems which are able to diagnose a situation, to describe and to qualify it. They will be able to identify and mutually address each other. They will be predictive and therefore they will be able to decide and help to decide. Smart systems will enable the automobile to interact with the environment, they will perform multiple tasks and assist a variety of activities. Smart systems will be highly reliable, often networked and energy autonomous. There is a coincidence of the AMAA objectives and those of EPoSS, the European Technology Platform on Smart Systems Integration, contributing intensively to the development of automotive-specific smart systems. You will find a series of the EPoSS items in the programme of the 11th AMAA, which continues to be a unique exchange forum for companies in the automotive value chain. The publication in hand also reflects these issues. It is a cut-out of new technological priorities in the area of microsystems-based smart devices and opens up a mid-term perspective of future smart systems applications in automobiles.
