"In 1826 Angela Veronese, a gardener’s daughter, wrote and published the first modern autobiography by an Italian woman. Veronese’s account focuses on her unique experience as a peasant girl who came of age among the Venetian elite, and details how she attained a certain renown in and out of Italy by improvising, writing, and publishing her own lyrics. Courting Celebrity is a bilingual annotated edition of Veronese’s autobiography. To better elucidate Veronese’s thinking, the book includes the autobiographical writing of another contemporary Italian poet, Teresa Bandettini, a well-known Tuscan poet-improviser. The book offers a substantial sample of Veronese’s poems, translated and in the original. These compositions, together with detailed bibliographical documentation, point to the success of Veronese’s autobiographical enterprise and offer an unparalleled view of both high society and popular culture at the time. In doing so, this text illustrates women’s practice in two key literary genres, poetry and autobiography, and illuminates the strategies of women’s self-fashioning and pursuit of celebrity."--

'The sixteenth century was a period of crisis in the Catholic Church. Monastic reorganization was a major issue, and women were at the forefront of charting new directions in convent policy. The story of the Carmelite Reform has been told before, but never from the perspective of the women on the front lines. Nearly all accounts of the movement focus on Teresa de Avila, (1515-1582), and end with her death in 1582. 'Women Religious and Epistolary Exchange in the Carmelite Reform: The Disciples of Teresa de Ávila' carries the story beyond Teresa's death, showing how the next generation of Carmelite nuns struggled into the seventeenth century to continue her mission. It is unique in that it draws primarily from female-authored sources, in particular, the letters of three of Teresa's most dynamic disciples: María de San José, Ana de Jesús and Ana de San Bartolomé."-- 4ème de couverture

"Don Pedrito Jaramillo (1823-1907) and Santa Teresa Urrea (1873-1906) practiced curanderismo, or faith healing, along the U.S.-Mexico border around the turn of the twentieth century. Jaramillo worked on the far eastern Texas-Mexico border in the South Texas Rio Grande Valley, and Santa Teresa worked further west in El Paso, the Arizona-Sonora borderlands, and Southern California. In Borderlands Curanderos, Jennifer Koshatka Seman offers a sort of parallel biography of these two curanderos, examining their trajectories and setting their lives in dialogue with many of the concerns of recent borderlands history"--

"Teresa of Avila's cult was dramatically disseminated in previously unknown celebrations honoring her beatification (1614) and canonization (1622) in Italy and Portuguese Asia, the purview of her Discalced Carmelite Order's Italian Congregation. Reconstructions and analyses of the festivities in Genoa, Rome, Naples, Hormuz, and Goa center on the presentation of Teresa's gender, deeds, virtues, and miracles. The geopolitical roles played by religious, secular, and family networks in particularizing and propagating Teresa's universal cult are emphasized. The desired goal of converting Muslims and Hindus is addressed in light of attitudes toward ethnic and religious diversity shared by lay and ecclesiastical authorities"--
