Abstract

This book provides a sweeping overview of legal and illegal sports and race betting in the United States, from the first thoroughbred meet at Saratoga in 1863 through the modern day. The cultural war between bookmakers and their adversaries is a recurring theme, as bookmakers were often forced into the shadows during times of social reform, only to bloom anew when the time was ripe. This informative and engaging book is the first comprehensive exploration of the evolution of bookmaking, including the legal developments and technological advancements that have taken place over the years.

Abstract

The world of gambling on sports is a controversial and provocative place.  Author Oliver Jones has written a neat book entitled SPORT GAMBLING 101. It is an educational, tell-it-like-it-is work of research. What to do, how and where to do it, and what not to do, are fully described in this user-friendly reference guide.  With facts, details, opinions, and anecdotes, its simplicity and honesty make it unique from the competition.  This book is written for the novice who wants to learn, the pro who wants to refresh, as well as the addict who needs help and wants to quit.  Learn more about the gambling industry and the sportbooks and how they operate.  SPORT GAMBLING 101 is a must-read for any gambler, sports fan, or anyone interested (whether one gambles or not). Its chapters include: 1.  Why Sports Gamble?, 2.  Things You Must Know, 3.  How and Where to Sports Gamble, 4.  ALL Sports: Football * Basketball * Baseball * Hockey, Nascar * Golf * Boxing * Soccer, 5.  General Tips and Strategies, 6.  The Cops, The Refs, The Beautiful Women, 7.  Be Your Own Bookie, 8.  Why Not to Sports Gamble, 9.  Terms and Definitions. Oliver Jones grew up playing and watching almost all sports and he witnessed first hand the explosion of TV sports and sport radio as well as the gambling industry.  He was inspired to write 'Sport Gambling 101' because, while there is a lot written on the casino games such as Poker or Black Jack, there is very little good writing on sport gambling, in the broader picture.  Oliver succeeds in his book in informing the sport gambling public and entertaining the rest of the population.  Reading this book will prove the best bet you will ever make!.

Abstract

"Delving into the history of gambling and corruption in intercollegiate sports, Cheating the Spread recounts all of the major gambling scandals in college football and basketball. Digging through court records, newspapers, government documents, and university archives and conducting private interviews, Albert J. Figone finds that game rigging has been pervasive and nationwide throughout most of the sports' history. The insidious practice has spread to implicate not only bookies and unscrupulous gamblers but also college administrators, athletic organizers, coaches, fellow students, and the athletes themselves. Naming the players, coaches, gamblers, and go-betweens involved, Figone discusses numerous college basketball and football games reported to have been fixed and describes the various methods used to gain unfair advantage, inside information, or undue profit. His survey of college football includes early years of gambling on games between established schools such as Yale, Princeton, and Harvard; Notre Dame's All-American halfback and skilled gambler George Gipp; and the 1962 allegations of insider information between Alabama coach Paul "Bear" Bryant and former Georgia coach James Wallace "Wally" Butts; and many other recent incidents. Notable events in basketball include the 1951 scandal involving City College of New York and six other schools throughout the East Coast and the Midwest; the 1961 point-shaving incident that put a permanent end to the Dixie Classic tournament; the 1978 scheme in which underworld figures recruited and bribed several Boston College players to ensure a favorable point spread; the 1994-95 Northwestern scandal in which players bet against their own team; and other recent examples of compromised gameplay and gambling"--

Abstract

This is a book about a gambling system that works. It tells the story of how the author used computer simulations and mathematical modeling techniques to predict the outcome of jai-alai matches and bet on them successfully - increasing his initial stake by over 500% in one year! His results can work for anyone: at the end of the book he tells the best way to watch jai-alai, and how to bet on it. With humour and enthusiasm, Skiena details a life-long fascination with computer predictions and sporting events. Along the way, he discusses other gambling systems, both successful and unsuccessful, for such games as lotto, roulette, blackjack, and the stock market. Indeed, he shows how his jai-alai system functions just like a miniature stock trading system. Do you want to learn about program trading systems, the future of Internet gambling, and the real reason brokerage houses don't offer mutual funds that invest at racetracks and frontons? How mathematical models are used in political polling? The difference between correlation and causation? If you are curious about gambling and mathematics, odds are this book is for you!

Abstract

Born into a working-class Polish immigrant family in Elizabeth, New Jersey, Raymond Lesniak went on to become a major force in the tough and bruising world of state politics. In this remarkable memoir, he reflects upon his life and career fighting for social justice in the Garden State. He recounts the many causes he championed in his forty years as a state legislator, from the landmark Environmental Cleanup Responsibility Act to bills concerning animal protections, marriage equality, women’s reproductive rights, and the abolition of the death penalty. He also delves into his experiences on the national stage as a key advisor for Bill Clinton and Al Gore’s presidential campaigns. With refreshing candor, Lesniak describes both his greatest achievements and his moments of failure, including his unsuccessful 2017 gubernatorial run. Cultivating Justice in the Garden State is both a gripping American success story and a must-read for anyone seeking to understand the inner workings of our political system. It offers an insider’s perspective on the past fifty years of New Jersey politics, while presenting a compelling message about what leaders and citizens can do to improve the state’s future.
