Abstract

This book is written for graduate students just beginning research, for theorists curious about what experimentalists actually can and do measure, and for experimentalists bewildered by theory. It is a guide for potential users of spectroscopic data, and uses language and concepts that bridge the frequency-and time-domain spectroscopic communities. Key topics, concepts, and techniques include: the assignment of simple spectra, basic experimental techniques, definition of Born-Oppenheimer and angular momentum basis sets and the associated spectroscopic energy level patterns (Hund's cases), construction of effective Hamiltonian matrices to represent both spectra and dynamics, terms neglected in the Born-Oppenheimer approximation (situations intermediate between Hund's cases, spectroscopic perturbations), nonlinear least squares fitting, calculation and interpretation of coupling terms, semi-classical (WKB) approximation, transition intensities and interference effects, direct photofragmentation (dissociation and ionization) and indirect photofragmentation (predissociation and autoionization) processes, visualization of intramolecular dynamics, quantum beats and wavepackets, treatment of decaying quasi-eigenstates using a complex Heff model, and concluding with some examples of polyatomic molecule dynamics. Students will discover that there is a fascinating world of cause-and-effect localized dynamics concealed beyond the reduction of spectra to archival molecular constants and the exact ab initio computation of molecular properties. Professional spectroscopists, kinetics, ab initio theorists will appreciate the practical, simplified-model, and rigorous theoretical approaches discussed in this book. Key Features: & bull; A fundamental reference for all spectra of small, gas-phase molecules. & bull; It is the most up-to-date and comprehensive book on the electronic spectroscopy and dynamics of diatomic molecules. & bull; The authors pioneered the development of many of the experimental methods, concepts, models, and computational schemes described in this book. *A fundamental reference for all spectra of small, gas-phase molecules *It is the most up-to-date and comprehensive book on the electronic spectroscopy and dynamics of diatomic molecules. *The authors pioneered the development of many of the experimental methods, concepts, models, and computational schemes described in this book.

Abstract

This book is intended for senior undergraduate and graduate students as well as practicing engineers who are involved in design and analysis of radio frequency (RF) circuits.  Detailed tutorials are included on all major topics required to understand fundamental principles behind both the main sub-circuits required to design an RF transceiver and the whole communication system. Starting with review of fundamental principles in electromagnetic (EM) transmission and signal propagation, through detailed practical analysis of RF amplifier, mixer, modulator, demodulator, and oscillator circuit topologies, all the way to the system communication theory behind the RF transceiver operation, this book systematically covers all relevant aspects in a way that is suitable for a single semester university level course.   Offers readers a complete, self-sufficient tutorial style textbook; Includes all relevant topics required to study and design an RF receiver in a consistent, coherent way with appropriate depth for a one-semester course; The labs and the book chapters are synchronized throughout a 13-week semester so that the students first study each sub-circuit and the related theory in class, practice problems, work out design details and then build and test the sub-circuit in the lab, before moving onto the next chapter; Includes detailed derivations of all key equations related to new concepts.

Abstract

The 60GHz band is promising for applications such as high-speed short-range wireless personal area network (WPAN), real time video streaming at rates of several Gbps, automotive radar, and mm-Wave imaging, since it provides a large amount of bandwidth that can freely (i.e. without a license) be used worldwide. However, transceivers at 60GHz pose several additional challenges over microwave transceivers. In addition to the circuit design challenges of implementing high performance 60GHz RF circuits in mainstream CMOS technology, the path loss at 60GHz is significantly higher than at microwave frequencies because of the smaller size of isotropic antennas. This can be overcome by using phased array technology. Integrated 60GHz RF Beamforming in CMOS describes new concepts and design techniques that can be used for 60GHz phased array systems. First, general trends and challenges in low-cost high data-rate 60GHz wireless system are studied, and the phased array technique is introduced to improve the system performance. Second, the system requirements of phase shifters are analyzed, and different phased array architectures are compared. Third, the design and implementation of 60GHz passive and active phase shifters in a CMOS technology are presented. Fourth, the integration of 60GHz phase shifters with other key building blocks such as low noise amplifiers and power amplifiers are described in detail. Finally, this book describes the integration of a 60GHz CMOS amplifier and an antenna in a printed circuit-board (PCB) package.

Abstract

This book is about the theory and practice of spectrum sharing and is aimed at a wide audience. Although it addresses basic technical issues, the emphasis is on practice rather than theory. In presenting an overall picture of spectrum sharing, this book covers the why--the regulatory aspects as well as the how--the technical aspects. The latter is supported with a theoretical taxonomy of dimensions, modes and means of spectrum sharing and a number of practical cases of spectrum sharing are discussed, using established technologies as examples. This book should prove accessible to wireless systems designers, RF engineers and protocol developers as well as to planners for large scale wireless LAN deployments. The combination of theoretical explanation and practice based analysis is expected to prove useful for radio spectrum managers and regulators as well as standards development organizations. Further, this book should prove useful for educators and students in that it provides practice oriented background for the more abstract material presented in textbooks dealing with radio spectrum related theory.
