Rehabilitation should not stop when the disabled person is discharged from hospital, and many neurological patients require ongoing rehabilitation in order to maximize their functional abilities, minimize complications and promote full participation at home and in the community. This book analyses community rehabilitation needs from many different perspectives, including the views of disabled people, rehabilitation clinicians and service providers. Many examples of community rehabilitation schemes are presented, with evidence for their effectiveness, and case studies are used to highlight the main issues. The authors take an international view, and there are chapters dealing with the disabled child in the community and with neuropsychological rehabilitation. This important book examines the growing trend towards community rehabilitation in neurology and is directed towards all clinicians involved with neurorehabilitation.

Today's physicians are medical scientists, drilled in the basics of physiology, anatomy, genetics, and chemistry. They learn how to crunch data, interpret scans, and see the human form as a set of separate organs and systems in some stage of disease. Missing from their training is a holistic portrait of the patient as a person and as a member of a community. Yet a humanistic passion and desire to help people often are the attributes that compel a student toward a career in medicine. So what happens along the way to tarnish that idealism? Can a new approach to medical education make a difference? Doctors Serving People is just such a prescriptive. While a professor at Rush Medical College in Chicago, Edward J. Eckenfels helped initiate and direct a student-driven program in which student doctors worked in the poor, urban communities during medical school, voluntarily and without academic credit. In addition to their core curriculum and clinical rotations, students served the social and health needs of diverse and disadvantaged populations. Now more than ten years old, the program serves as an example for other medical schools throughout the country. Its story provides a working model of how to reform medical education in America.

Cancer and chronic disease are a rapidly increasing global health burden : according to the Milken Institute, the annual cost to the national US economy of the seven most common chronic conditions will rise to $4.2 trillion by 2023. The data are just as dramatic in Canada, Europe, Australia, and increasingly, in countries in the developing world. As communities, governments, and health organizations worldwide struggle to avoid being swamped by health care costs - not to mention the impact of suffering and poor quality of life - the only long-term, sustainable hope must be based on prevention efforts. This book presents a promising new approach to educating, engaging, empowering, and generating action within communities as part of that broader prevention agenda. The authors review representative global experiences with community based prevention educators, focusing on the prevention coordination work that can be accomplished within geographical areas ranging from local communities to broader regions. Among the findings they reveal in this book are the fundamental elements of successful Community Based Prevention programs - skilled staff, high-quality evaluation, and sustained investment in prevention efforts.
