"The idea that motivation is largely an internally generated desire is sometimes new to individuals. Traditional thinking held by a large portion of the population is that leaders motivate others within organizations, and motivation is impacted predominantly by external incentives that are created to encourage others to conform and comply with desired performance standards. Although many leaders, managers, and supervisors may believe that it is part of their job description to motivate their followers, the opinion of many experts is that motivation is largely an internally-generated choice made by each individual. If it is true that motivation is primarily internally generated, perhaps this book should then be accompanied by a "Warning Label" that reads, "Caution! This book may influence your thinking and change your assumptions about yourself!" In fact, the primary purpose of this book is to "hold up a mirror" so that readers may, if they so choose, reflect on themselves and the factors which motivate them individually. If motivation is both individual and highly personal, then it behooves each one of us to thoughtfully undertake a self-assessment process to understand more fully how we are motivated, inspired, and influenced in our daily lives. Throughout this book, we cheerfully admit that we challenge assumptions of "conventional wisdom" that are often held by the average person. Much of what we think we know needs to be confirmed or disconfirmed in this world and there is no better place to validate what we actually know than with our efforts to understand ourselves. The theme of this book is clear and straight forward. "Each individual is far more capable of accomplishing great things than he or she can even imagine - and understanding our own identity can enable us to more completely honor our potential." That's the main idea of this book - and we think it's both a powerful message and a worthy subject to study and understand for every person who picks up this book or who accesses it online. There are very few simple issues in life, and certainly the complex nature of each person's world is no exception. The effort that individuals make to understand what matters most in their lives is rarely consciously undertaken - or compared with how those individuals actually invest their time each day. In this book we address why individuals make so many of the errors associated with self-deception, cognitive dissonance, and downright personal dishonest or lying to oneself. More importantly, we also address how readers can reflect on those common practices and make the decision to change dysfunctional patterns and self-defeating behaviors that cause so many people to underperform in life. If you wish to gain a clearer understanding of yourself and the degree to which your actions are inconsistent with what you think matters most, then perhaps this book is just what you have been looking for. We encourage each reader to make the personal investment to examine each chapter of this book and determine how its contents can change their life. Our promise to you is that this book and its contents can help you to have a clearer understanding of yourself, your habits, your inconsistencies, and your values. The contents of this book contain principles, guidelines, and concepts that you can ponder, test, and evaluate - and our commitment to you is that you will become a more enlightened and insightful person if you incorporate the ideas suggested herein. So . . . . we hope that you choose to be motivated - that you make the affirmative choice to read the pages of this book, to contemplate its message, and apply its insights. That decision to invest in yourself can enable you to live a more fulfilling life, have more meaningful relationships with others, and be more successful in accomplishing your personal and professional goals. The decision to be motivated to read this book is yours. We hope you will find this book to be a useful resource and that its contents will bless your life"--

The ubiquity of digital images is an effect of their distributive versatility. They can be stored almost indefinitely, transmitted instantaneously, reproduced without transformations, visualized in many layers, dated and processed. Their mobilization does not take place randomly, but follows a complex media logistics of format standards, infrastructures and transport calculations. Digital images will be and are distributed: not as sessile objects, bindingly fixed entities, but as stream-like modulated processes. The study conceptualizes actors and agendas of image data traffic, examines retro-digitized archive image corpora in terms of media history and distribution histories, and deals with 'calmed' image sensor operations in intelligent environments.

This book presents a fictional dialogue among four former college friends about Oneness and self-realization. News of the sudden death of a relative occasions their discussion. One friend, a devotee of the Advaita or non-duality school of Hindu philosophy, seeks to short-circuit the pain and suffering characteristically associated with anxieties about human mortality. According to her, to be is to be the ultimate ineffable undifferentiated Being, the birthless and the deathless—the One. The other friends, whose philosophical attitudes are broadly pragmatist, relativist, and realist, inquire into her views. While the pragmatist looks to the advaitist for guidance about meditative practices, she does not renounce human existence. She welcomes the joys and satisfactions as well as the burdens and pains of human existence. In turn, the relativist is skeptical about theories that aim to reach beyond one’s historical, cultural or personal frame of reference. On his view, to be is to be in relationship, especially with other human beings. Finally, the realist seeks objective, frame-independent truth. In addition, he holds that the world is comprised of individual objects and their properties. Accordingly, he finds the idea of Oneness to be incomprehensible.

"How does a young man who is losing his eyesight go about shaping a life? Such a dilemma is the stuff of "pathography," a dreary genre of literature that emphasizes suffering and loss. This literary convention and the misconceptions that fuel it are challenged by Allan Jones in his autobiography, Beyond Vision - Going Blind, Inner Seeing, and the Nature of the Self. Jones was Canada's first blind diplomat, and his vivid account of life and work in Tokyo, New Delhi and Ottawa is a testament to the blind person's native capacity for innovation and practical adjustment. But the deeper message of Beyond Vision is more radical and consequential: the self - the real self that is normally veiled - does not go blind. The deep self stands entirely apart from the experience of sightedness or blindness, as a centre of stable equanimity. This is what the author discovered through his study and assimilation of Indian Vedantic philosophy. Jones briefly describes the basic features of Advaita Vedanta, and identifies startling findings of contemporary science that are consonant with the Advaitic view of world and self. He then outlines practical applications of Advaita, for example the mindfulness practice that allowed him to retain his white cane mobility skills despite chronic and untreatable spinal and muscular pain. Beyond Vision is an intimate, many-sided personal and family biography. But the dominant feature of this book is the way the world changed out of all recognition, with the author as its fascinated explorer and laborialist."--

The goal of this book is to stimulate an awareness of a person's Authentic Self. Exercises and suggestions are provided, with special attention directed to a person's "inner space" where we are encouraged to locate and awaken the neglected or dormant resources present in every human being and apply them in the world. "The ubiquitous presence of imaginative work points at its importance among the higher mental functions. This collective volume discusses both the social relevance of imagination, that cannot be reduced to an inter-individual feature, and the cultural-historical conditions of imagining. The authors develop different theoretical and empirical works in which imagining, planning, anticipating, remembering and acting are put in relation with crucial moments of human existence, as early as birth and even after death. The proposal of this volume emerged during a "kitchen seminar" session at the III International Seminar of Cultural Psychology in Salvador da Bahia (Brazil, 2017). The debate revolved around the imaginative capability of human beings and the possibilities to investigate this phenomenon in a new key. The awareness that an innovative theoretical and empirical contribution was needed to the understanding of imaginative phenomena in everyday life led to the proposal of the book From Dream to Action: Imagination and (Im)Possible Futures. The book aims to talk to different audiences: psychologists, sociologists, artists, teachers and healthcare professionals, addressing a variety of life experiences - such as imagining alternative futures when facing a terminal illness, an adoption, a transplant waiting list, or the choice to give up your musical instrument - mobilize multiple dimensions of human psyche, from the basic emotions to the more sophisticated higher mental functions.. The constant effort is to understand the psychological and sociocultural dynamics of each event, and to contribute to the understanding of human imagining in the area of semiotic-cultural psychology, dialoguing with contributions from all the human and social sciences."--
