Abstract

Short-term psychotherapy has become more and more popular in recent years and there is an increasing need for therapists to be able to offer help without entering into many years of therapy. This practical volume is an introductory text and a quick reference guide to short-term therapy, by an experienced therapist and teacher of psychodynamic short-term therapy. It is based on lectures given on the topic to experienced therapists wanting to familiarise themselves with short-term therapy. In a clear and concise manner, the author explores the basics of this approach and moves on to discuss such topics as the importance of the first session; the timescale of the therapy, the different techniques; and ending of analysis. Full of useful tables and bullet points, this volume is an indispensable guide to short-term psychodynamic therapy for experienced therapists as well as laypeople who are interested in learning more about this method of therapy.

Abstract

There are now many fine books on psychotherapy, but the author felt that a basic, simply written book, with a minimum of theory, would be helpful to the beginning therapist. This is a practical book that includes only the more important issues that he has learned in forty years of study, practice, and teaching. The author tells the reader how he conducts psychotherapy: by having a format in mind, taking a comprehensive history, and a careful, observing examination of the patient. He then advises on how to conduct psychotherapy with various patients and with special consideration of certain pro

Abstract

'Putting aside the narcissistic-masochistic aspiration of authoring a text on all the intricacies of in-depth psychotherapy, I have chosen to address five areas of difficulty in this enterprise. This relatively restricted focus has made it possible to tackle matters in their true complexity and intrigue. The loss of breadth is thus compensated by the gain in depth. The areas I have chosen to explicate pertain to initial assessment, boundaries, money, disruptions, and suicidal crises. Over three decades of clinical experience has taught me that most problems in the course of dynamic psychothera

Abstract

This book aims to describe and explain the bias against brief psychotherapy, whilst stressing the importance of actively challenging resistance and working through the transference. It also covers the positive use of anger - even from the first session. As a group analyst concerned with social and psychological issues, Dr Angela Molnos brings a unique perspective to bear on the problems raised, both for society and the individual, by the confusion and the prejudice surrounding HIV infection and the Aids epidemic. Recognizing that these problems can vitiate even the most enlightened health care policies, she draws on her experience gained by working in several countries to put the case for the application of group analysis, through the organization of staff support groups, to those directly concerned with policy implementation; The carers themselves. In the first part of her book Dr Molnos demonstrates how, if unchecked, conscious and unconscious prejudice can promote destructive tendencies within the groups involved with HIV and AIDS patients.

Abstract

Little has been written about psychotherapy with the seriously physically ill and this book seeks to remedy that. The title Dual Realities refers to the inner reality of the individuals internal world and the outer reality of their illness and the interaction between the two. Out of this arena came an understanding that what is important for the client/patient is the meaning, for them, of their illness. Dual Realities aims to show how therapists can work effectively with ill or disabled people, by facing their fears, adjusting their technique and by learning from their patients. To the general reader it offers an insight into this important area of psychotherapeutic work. To us all it gives the opportunity to discover the courage of those who were willing to pursue the path of psychotherapy in the search for wholeness and meaning in their illness and who have allowed their explorations to be published. This book will be of value to both qualified and trainee counsellors and psychotherapists who find themselves working with clients/patients who are seriously physically ill or disabled.

Abstract

Over two decades, on two continents, Josette ten Have-de Labije and Robert J. Neborsky have struggled to define and perfect the therapeutic methods of Habib Davanloo. Between the two of them, they run active training groups in San Diego, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Washington, D.C., London, Amsterdam, Warsaw and Scandinavia. In individual practice, in teaching situations and in partnered study, they have worked carefully to translate the theory and application of the revolutionary clinician's approach. This textbook defines the terms: observing ego, attentive ego, punitive superego, transferen

Abstract

"Knowledge is never static. It is always open to revolutionary thinking or to evolving development. Similarly an individual's knowledge is always moving, and indeed if the ability to think about ideas is lost, an important part of the individual is also lost. In this book, a collection of some of the papers and lectures written by Michael Jacobs over a period of thirty or more years, the author shows his own thinking at work, as he challenges himself to look deeper at some important aspects of his discipline - principally psychodynamic psychotherapy, although always with reference to other forms of discourse such as literature and theology. Here the reader will find the writer behind those popular texts such as The Presenting Past, Psychodynamic Counselling in Action and Shakespeare on the Couch."--Provided by publisher.

Abstract

"Traditionally, psychoanalytic treatment has been a lengthy endeavour, requiring a long-term commitment from patient and analyst, as well as vast financial resources. More recently, short-term approaches to psychoanalytic treatment have proliferated. One of the most well-known and thoroughly studied is the groundbreaking method of Intensive Short-term Dynamic Psychotherapy, developed by Dr. Habib Davanloo. Having trained directly with Dr. Davenloo, the author has written a clear, concise outline of the method that has come to be regarded as a classic in the field. The book is organised in a systematic fashion, analogous to the process of therapy itself, from initial contact through to termination and follow-up. Detailed clinical examples are presented throughout the text to illustrate how theory is translated into techniques of unparalleled power and effectiveness."--Provided by publisher.
