Kiyosi Itô's greatest contribution to probability theory may be his introduction of stochastic differential equations to explain the Kolmogorov-Feller theory of Markov processes. Starting with the geometric ideas that guided him, this book gives an account of Itô's program. The modern theory of Markov processes was initiated by A. N. Kolmogorov. However, Kolmogorov's approach was too analytic to reveal the probabilistic foundations on which it rests. In particular, it hides the central role played by the simplest Markov processes: those with independent, identically distributed increments. To remedy this defect, Itô interpreted Kolmogorov's famous forward equation as an equation that describes the integral curve of a vector field on the space of probability measures. Thus, in order to show how Itô's thinking leads to his theory of stochastic integral equations, Stroock begins with an account of integral curves on the space of probability measures and then arrives at stochastic integral equations when he moves to a pathspace setting. In the first half of the book, everything is done in the context of general independent increment processes and without explicit use of Itô's stochastic integral calculus. In the second half, the author provides a systematic development of Itô's theory of stochastic integration: first for Brownian motion and then for continuous martingales. The final chapter presents Stratonovich's variation on Itô's theme and ends with an application to the characterization of the paths on which a diffusion is supported. The book should be accessible to readers who have mastered the essentials of modern probability theory and should provide such readers with a reasonably thorough introduction to continuous-time, stochastic processes.

Maya Deren (1917-1961) was a Russian-born American filmmaker, theorist, poet, and photographer working at the forefront of the American avant-garde in the 1940's and 1950's. Influenced by Jean Cocteau and Marcel Duchamp, she is best known for her seminal film Meshes of the Afternoon (1943), a dream-like experiment with time and symbol, looped narrative and provocative imagery, setting the stage for the twentieth-century's groundbreaking aesthetic movements and films. Maya Deren assesses both the filmmaker's completed work and her numerous unfinished projects, arguing Deren's overarching aesthetic is founded on principles of incompletion, contingency, and openness. Combining the contrasting approaches of documentary, experimental, and creative film, Deren created a wholly original experience for film audiences that disrupted the subjectivity of cinema, its standards of continuity, and its dubious facility with promoting categories of realism. This critical retrospective reflects on the development of Deren's career and the productive tensions she initiated that continue to energize film.

Consacré à l'architecture des bibliothèques contemporaines, cet ouvrage retrace le parcours historique des modèles d'organisation d'espaces dédiés à la conservation de la mémoire écrite ; il s'interroge sur les schémas actuels de fonctionnement d'une institution vieille de plus de deux mille ans et pourtant en perpétuelle évolution. Partant des premiers rouleaux cachés dans les niches des temples, Aldo De Poli analyse les origines lointaines de l'édifice "bibliothèque". Du Moyen Age à la Renaissance, il nous fait découvrir ces espaces, toujours plus identifiables et mieux conçus, destinés à devenir au fil du temps des institutions ouvertes au public. Il poursuit par l'étude de la bibliothèque comme thème d'architecture civile, quand elle devient une entité autonome avec des caractéristiques architecturales propres et codifiables. Avec le XIXe siècle qui favorise le développement des bibliothèques "nationales", on assiste à la réalisation d'architectures toujours plus complexes, composées de parties différenciées, mais étroitement liées, chacune bénéficiant de nouveautés techniques et spatiales. Les expériences du XXe siècle offrent de précieux repères pour l'histoire de l'architecture moderne : il ne s'agit plus seulement de témoigner de traditions, mais d'exprimer, à travers des propositions singulières, une recherche ouverte ou une poétique d'auteur aisément repérable. Cependant, après la Seconde Guerre mondiale, le respect de l'identité du lieu, du milieu naturel et de la tradition historique s'affirme. A travers de surprenantes inventions d'œuvres d'art total, c'est toute une nouvelle conception de la monumentalité urbaine qui s'exprime.
