Abstract

"What does the landscape architect actually do as a design?" The authors investigate this seemingly simple question. What resources are available for designing open spaces? What part is played by conditions deriving from nature? How are locations and spaces created in the open air, how are paths routed and boundaries set, how are hard and soft materials used? Drawing on practical and theoretical experience, this introduction, often used as a textbook, reveals the central components of design and the intellectual paths followed in the design process."The book is not so much for reading but for doing. It plays with shapes, imagining how people feel in these shapes and seeing how shapes create a different experience of landscape. Vegetation can make the relief of a hill clearer, less clear, indistinct or hidden. The authors show this by sketches illustrating the text ... As an example of the way Loidl and Bernard set their readers thinking for themselves, I "e what they regard as good design: 'The paradox of a good design solution: more uniformity needs more variety.'Food for thought. Or read Open(ing) Spaces." (Martin Woestenburg in 'scape, 2006)

Abstract

From the verticals of New York, Hong Kong and Australia's Gold Coast to the sprawls of London, Paris and Jakarta, this cross-disciplinary volume of new writing examines constructions, representations, imaginations and theorizations of urban space and cityscapes in modern and contemporary culture. Linked by a shared concern for issues of spatiality, the essay topics are organized around three interrelated themes - image, text, and form - and range from the examination of cyberpunk skylines, postcolonial urbanism, and the cinema of urban disaster, to the analysis of iconic city landmarks such as the Twin Towers, the London Eye, and the Jewish Museum Berlin. Working at the intersections of visual, material, and literary culture, 'Urban Space and Cityscapes' seeks in particular: to provide new critical and theoretical perspectives on the city at a time when the condition and future of urbanism are major subjects of international and public concern. to examine the aesthetic, narrative, and representational strategies used to interpret the dynamic space of cities. to explore the relationship between urban space and a variety of pressing cultural concerns, including issues of identity, memory, technology, class, gender, nation, and ethnicity. With original essays from the fields of architecture, cultural theory, film, geography, literature, and visual art, 'Urban Space' 'and Cityscapes' offers fresh insight into the increasingly complex relationship between urban space, cultural production, and everyday life.

Abstract

Architecture creates complex spatial situations that are the subject of urban design. Design uses a repertoire of specific architectural means in a creative way, resulting in cities that can be lived in and perceived in their three-dimensional experience. The current book, an extended new edition of Architecture of the City (2016), describes the repertoire with which architecture and design regain an entry to urbanistics. It pleads for an "architectonic turn" in urbanistics - a demand to finally comprehend the city architecturally: the issue is not just about buildings in the city, but about architecture of the city as a whole, as is clearly expressed in the new title of City as Architecture.

Abstract

Abstract

City of Play shows how play is built into the very fabric of the modern city. From playgrounds to theme parks, skittle alleys to swimming pools, to the countless uncontrolled spaces which the urban habitat affords - play is by no means just a childhood affair. A myriad essentially unproductive playful pursuits have, through time, modelled the modern city and landscape. Architect and scholar Rodrigo Pérez de Arce's erudite, original, and often surprising study explores a curiously neglected dimension of architectural design and practice: ludic space. It is an architectural history of the playground - from the hippodrome to the Situationist city - of space released from productive ends in the pursuit of leisure. But this is more than just a book about how architecture has incorporated play into its spaces and structures, it is a history of the modern city itself. The ludic imagination impregnated modernist ideals, and what begins with the playground ends with a re-consideration of the whole sweep of the modern movement through the filter of leisure and play. Because play is such a basic or fundamental human experience, the book re-grounds the architect's concerns with those of non-architects - and not only those of adults but also of children. It seeks to give everyone - architects and other ordinary city-dwellers alike - a better understanding about what is at stake in the making of the public spaces of our cities.

Abstract

Abstract

As the subject of earnest discussion, the meaning of space reaches far beyond the horizon of a single discipline. Lukas Feiriss has assembled a collection of international contributions for Space Matters, a publication of the space & design strategies study program of the University of Art and Design, Linz, Austria to create an inspiring expansion of the contemporary discourse on space. The publication addresses cultural researchers and readers in creative professions - architects, artists, curators, scientists and students in all the related fields as well as those members of a broader audience that are interested in the incorporation of space and the practices with which it is designed in cultural, social and humanities-oriented contexts.
