Abstract

Ad hoc networks, which include a variety of autonomous networks for specific purposes, promise a broad range of civilian, commercial, and military applications. These networks were originally envisioned as collections of autonomous mobile or stationary nodes that dynamically auto-configure themselves into a wireless network without relying on any existing network infrastructure or centralized administration. With the significant advances in the last decade, the concept of ad hoc networks now covers an even broader scope, referring to the many types of autonomous wireless networks designed and deployed for a specific task or function, such as wireless sensor networks, vehicular networks, home networks, and so on. In contrast to the traditional wireless networking paradigm, such networks are all characterized by sporadic connections, highly error-prone communications, distributed autonomous operation, and fragile multi-hop relay paths. The new wireless networking paradigm necessitates reexamination of many established concepts and protocols, and calls for developing a new understanding of fundamental problems such as interference, mobility, connectivity, capacity, and security, among others. While it is essential to advance theoretical research on fundamental and practical research on efficient policies, algorithms and protocols, it is also critical to develop useful applications, experimental prototypes, and real-world deployments to achieve an immediate impact on society for the success of this wireless networking paradigm.

Abstract

Ad hoc networks refer to the wireless networking paradigm that covers a variety of network forms for specific purposes, such as mobile ad hoc networks, sensor n- works, vehicular networks, underwater networks, underground networks, personal area networks, and home networks. The various forms of ad hoc networks promise a broad scope of applications in civilian, commercial, and military areas, which have led to significant new research problems and challenges, and have attracted great efforts from academia, industry, and government. This unique networking paradigm neces- tates re-examination of many established wireless networking concepts and protocols, and calls for developing new fundamental understanding of problems such as interf- ence, mobility, connectivity, capacity, and security, among others. While it is ess- tial to advance theoretical research on fundamentals and practical research on efficient algorithms and protocols, it is also critical to develop useful applications, experim- tal prototypes, and real-world deployments to achieve a practical impact on our so- ety for the success of this networking paradigm. The annual International Conference on Ad Hoc Networks (AdHocNets) is a new event that aims at providing a forum to bring together researchers from academia as well as practitioners from industry and government to meet and exchange ideas and recent research work on all aspects of ad hoc networks. As the first edition of this event, AdHocNets 2009 was successfully held in Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada, during September 22-25, 2009.

Abstract

This book highlights the analysis of new azimuth-independent methods of Stokes polarimetry and Mueller-matrix reconstruction of distributions of optical anisotropy parameters using spatial-frequency filtering of manifestations of phase (linear and circular birefringence) and amplitude (linear and circular dichroism) anisotropy for diagnosing changes in the orientational-phase structure of fibrillar networks of histological sections of biological tissues and polycrystalline films of biological fluids.

Abstract

This book highlights the effectiveness of differential diagnosis in the degree of severity of joint pathology from a clinical, biophysical, and informational point of view. It includes the following information blocks: • Two-dimensional digital polarization microscopy of polycrystalline films of synovial fluid and determination of the coordinate distributions of the orientation and phase parameters of the microscopic image from a set of parameters of the Stokes vector. • Mueller-matrix mapping of polycrystalline films of synovial fluid and determination of a set of coordinate distributions (Mueller-matrix images (MMI)) of azimuthal-invariant elements that characterize manifestations of optical activity and linear birefringence. • Development of algorithms for polarization reproduction of distributions of linear and circular birefringence of polycrystalline films of synovial fluid. • Identification of digital statistical, correlation and wavelet criteria of polarization and Mueller-matrix differential diagnosis of the degree of severity of joint pathology. • Determination of maps of laser-induced fluorescence of synovial fluid polycrystalline films. • Identification of statistical and correlational criteria for fluorescent differential diagnosis of the degree of severity of joint pathology. • Operational characteristics of the power of the methods of azimuth-invariant polarization, Mueller-matrix and laser autofluorescence microscopy of polycrystalline films of synovial fluid.
