Attentif à la ruine des savoirs et à la crise générale des valeurs, Paul Valéry sait que la société se fonde sur le crédit, la signature, le contrat, le serment, autant de formes de croyances qui déterminent un "empire de fictions" (politiques, juridiques, économiques...). En dialogue avec le Freud de "Malaise dans la civilisation", Valéry affirme "l'importance réelle de l'imaginaire" et l'imaginaire" et l'efficacité du crédit, du fiduciaire dans la dynamique des mécanismes sociaux et dans la philosophie. Cette anthropologie insolite conduit Valéry à l'hypothèse d'une "spiritualité du monde social", à la conviction que tout univers organisé est fragile et que seul le faire est porteur d'avenir. Après avoir consacré des livres à Nietzsche, à Freud et à Péguy, Jean-Michel Rey propose aujourd'hui une biographie intellectuelle de Valéry en restituant la part d'intelligence qui naît de son écriture fragmentaire. Au fil des chapitres, nous croisons Léonard de Vinci, Descartes, Stendhal, Poe, Wagner, Mallarmé, Walter Benjamin et , toujours, Nietzsche et Freud. A l'écart du cliché le présentant comme un "poète officiel", Jean-Michel Rey rend Valéry aux excès de son oeuvre contagieuse.

Ce livre tente de s’interroger sur ce que signifie la lecture de Kafka aujourd’hui, en prenant notamment pour point de départ cette espèce de laboratoire de l’œuvre que constitue le Journal. De cette œuvre on peut dire qu’elle est avant tout une écriture fragmentaire, une pratique qui déplace constamment les frontières du romanesque et de l’« autobiographie ». C’est pourquoi il est apparu nécessaire, dans cette perspective, de reprendre la question du nom propre (sa position entre plusieurs langues, son caractère emblématique, sa dynamique). Car c’est, sans doute, pour Franz Kafka, une des voies d’accès essentielle à l’écriture, une des manières de prendre en compte le poids de la langue allemande. Comment un corps se découvre-t-il délimité et circonscrit dans et par l’ordre humain, c’est-à-dire dans et par les contraintes d’une langue reçue, héritée ? Kafka, dans les histoires qu’il construit, est un écrivain qui cherche sans cesse à énoncer ce qui l’incite et le pousse à écrire. Il ouvre, de cette façon, à nouveau, pour notre siècle, la question même de la littérature, dans son aspect le plus élémentaire, c’est-à-dire le travail d’un sujet incapable d’habiter entièrement la langue dans laquelle il est contraint d’écrire. D’où l’importance qui est accordée, dans ce livre, au petit texte de F. Kafka intitulé Discours sur ta langue yiddish.

This volume is intended to problematize and challenge current conceptions of the category of “Wisdom” and to reconsider the scope, breadth and Nachleben of ancient Jewish sapiential traditions. It considers the formal features and conceptual underpinnings of wisdom throughout the corpus of the Hebrew Bible, the Dead Sea Scrolls, Hellenistic Jewish texts, Rabbinic texts, and the Cairo Geniza. It also situates ancient Jewish Wisdom in its Near Eastern context, as well as in the context of Hellenistic conceptions of the Sage.
