Abstract

Awareness systems can be broadly defined as those systems that help people construct and maintain awareness of each others' activities, context or status, even if the participants are not co-located. Originally intended for supporting people involved in the same activities at different locations, such systems are now used to support social interactions between any connected individuals and to support social relationships over sustained periods of time. Providing an overview of the current state-of-the-art this book provides a theoretical foundation for the design and development of Awareness Systems. It offers a reflection on the field, tracking research progress from past visions to current trends and future challenges, while presenting a representative collection of design concepts in the area and helping to systematize evaluation practices. It will be welcomed by all those working in the area of Awareness Systems.

Abstract

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the third International Joint Conference an Ambient Intelligence, AmI 2012, held in Pisa, Italy, in November 2012. The 18 revised full papers and 5 short papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from 47 (full papers) respectively 14 (short papers) submissions. From a scientific point of view, the papers make a multidisciplinary approach covering fields like computer science, human computer interaction, electrical engineering, industrial design, behavioral sciences, aimed at enriching physical environments with a network of distributed devices, such as sensors, actuators, and computational resources, in order to support users in their everyday activities. From a technological perspective the volume represents the convergence of recent achievements in ubiquitous and communication technologies, pervasive computing, intelligent user interfaces and artificial intelligence.

Abstract

The eighteenth annual British HCI Conference chose as its theme Design for Life. 'Life' has many facets, from work (of course, or should we say inevitably!) to travel, fun and other forms of leisure. We selected 23 full papers out of 63 submitted, which covered our interaction with computer systems in a variety of types of life situation including games, tourism and certain types of work and also covered a variety of stages in our lives, from the young to the elderly. These papers were complemented by others that described more traditional aspects of research in the field of human-computer interaction. In putting together the programme we followed a three-stage process. First each paper was reviewed by at least three reviewers. Then a member of the committee conducted a meta-review. Finally, all sets of reviews were considered by the technical chairs who assembled a programme that was submitted to, and approved by, the full committee. This process was greatly assisted by the use of the Precision Conference Solutions web-based submission system. Even more important, of course, were the volunteer reviewers themselves. In recognition, this year we have made an award for the best reviewer as well as one for the best paper.

Abstract

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the Second International Conference on Fun and Games, held in Eindhoven, The Netherlands, in October 2008. The 17 revised full papers, presented together with 2 invited talks were carefully reviewed and selected from a total of 36 submissions. The papers encompass the study of computer games, game development and experiences by researchers from social sciences, computing, electrical engineering, design, etc. Main focus is given to topics such as tightly-coupled embodied control of movement-sensitive mobile devices, hypercomputation and cultural computing, emerging gaming paradigms, concepts and platforms to support gaming, affective aspects of gaming, and finally to the notion of serious games to help provide cognitive or physiological training.

Abstract

This book constitutes the proceedings of the 8th International Conference on End-User Development, IS-EUD 2021, held in July 2021. Due to COVID-19 pandemic the conference was held virtually. The paper track received 26 submissions, of which 11 full and 4 short papers were selected after a rigorous double-blind review process. The papers focus on "Democratizing AI development", namely on EUD for AI-based systems, where end users are called-on to become end-user developers of intelligent agents, digital twins, collaborative systems and social robots.

Abstract

In a world supported by Ambient Intelligence (AmI), various devices embedded in the environment collectively use the distributed information and the intelligence inherent in this interconnected environment. A range of information from sensing and reas- ing technologies is used by distributed devices in the environment. The cooperation between natural user interfaces and sensor interfaces covers all of a person's s- roundings, resulting in a device environment that behaves intelligently; the term Ambient Intelligence has been coined to describe it. In this way, the environment is able to recognize the persons in it, to identify their individual needs, to learn from their behavior, and to act and react in their interest. Since this vision is influenced by a lot of different concepts in information proce- ing and combines multi-disciplinary fields in electrical engineering, computer science, industrial design, user interfaces, and cognitive sciences, considerable research is needed to provide new models of technological innovation within a multi-dimensional society. Thus the AmI vision relies on the large-scale integration of electronics into the environment, enabling the actors, i.e., people and objects, to interact with their surrounding in a seamless, trustworthy, and natural manner.
