This volumes deals with the presentations and debates from the guest lecture series on the occasion of the "European Year of Intercultural Dialogue" 2008 at the Göttingen University. Weltweite Globalisierungsprozesse und die Zunahme an gesellschaftlicher, religiöser, und weltwirtschaftlicher Komplexität haben die Begriffe „Interkulturalität“ und „Dialog“ nicht nur in der politischen Praxis, sondern auch in zahlreichen Wissenschaftsdisziplinen vehement an Bedeutung gewinnen lassen. Gleichwohl ist unübersehbar, dass „Interkulturalität“ bislang nur vage theoretisch fundiert ist, jedoch als Bezugspunkt für einen sich neu entwickelnden Verstehens- und Interaktionszusammenhang immer wieder in Erscheinung tritt. Genau in diese „Leerstelle“ sucht die hier dokumentierte Vorlesungsreihe zu treten, um sich aus der Perspektive unterschiedlicher, in vielerlei Hinsicht am akademischen Diskurs aktiv beteiligter Fächer mit einem „Interkulturellen Dialog“ auseinanderzusetzen. In ihrer Zusammenschau plädieren die hier versammelten Perspektiven für ein vernetztes Verstehen, das Grenzen zwischen Disziplinen, Kulturen, Religionen sowie Nationen hinter sich lässt. In den Beiträgen zeichnet sich eine Prozesshaftigkeit ab, die ausgehend von einer Hermeneutik des Fremden auf die Überwindung von Fremdheit zielt, um sich dann auf die Anerkennung der Differenz und Vielfalt von Kulturen hin zu bewegen.

The region of the Middle East has been called the cradle of mankind. This volume studies historical, cultural, religious, social and political legacies, which play a central role in obstructing intercultural dialogue in the Middle East. Conjointement à son édition chinoise publiée simultanément par les Presses de l’Université de Nanjing, on trouvera ici édité en français le texte intégral des communications prononcées lors du colloque international de Nankin (Chine). Cette première manifestation scientifique d’importance, consacrée à la présence et à la représentation de la Chine dans l’œuvre littéraire des écrivains français du XXe siècle, était coorganisée par l’Université française d’Artois et l’Université chinoise de Nanjing, qui accueillit du 4 au 7 octobre 1999 une vingtaine de chercheurs de ces deux universités ainsi que d’autres instituts de recherche et d’enseignement supérieur des deux pays. Au-delà des études monographiques dédiées, par les meilleurs spécialistes chinois et français, aux figures majeures de la sinophilie littéraire française du début du siècle (Loti, Claudel, Segalen, Saint-John Perse, Malraux, Michaux…) ou plus contemporaine (Marguerite Yourcenar, Gérard Macé, Pascal Quignard…), c’est surtout à une investigation de l’empreinte et de 1’imaginaire de la Chine chez les écrivains français du XXe siècle que se sont attachées les communications. À un moment de crise particulièrement aigue de la conscience européenne, la Chine semble bien avoir été, pour plusieurs générations de poètes et romanciers français et très au-delà de toute « cristallisation » ou « folklorisation », une destination et un espace de représentation dont l’importance symbolique a orienté toute une œuvre, et toute une vie parfois. « Forge des mythes » pour un Malraux – selon la belle expression de Pierre Morel, Ambassadeur de France en Chine, dans l’allocution inaugurale dont il a honoré ce colloque –, la Chine a aussi représenté pour plusieurs écrivains de cette époque un fantasme de symbiose parfaite (occident / orient, mais pas seulement…) – avec le rêve de se connaître enfin soi-même au contact de cet Autre absolu qu’est 1’« exote » chinois (Segalen), mais aussi avec le risque terrifiant de s’y…

Bringing the World Home sheds new light on China’s vibrant cultural life between 1895 and 1919—a crucial period that marks a watershed between the conservative old regime and the ostensibly iconoclastic New Culture of the 1920s. Although generally overlooked in the effort to understand modern Chinese history, the era has much to teach us about cultural accommodation and is characterized by its own unique intellectual life. This original and probing work traces the most significant strands of the new post-1895 discourse, concentrating on the anxieties inherent in a complicated process of cultural transformation. It focuses principally on how the need to accommodate the West was reflected in such landmark novels of the period as Wu Jianren’s Strange Events Eyewitnessed in the Past Twenty Years and Zhu Shouju’s Tides of the Huangpu, which began serial publication in Shanghai in 1916. The negative tone of these narratives contrasts sharply with the facile optimism that characterizes the many essays on the "New Novel" appearing in the popular press of the time. Neither iconoclasm nor the wholesale embrace of the new could square the contradicting intellectual demands imposed by the momentous alternatives presenting themselves.An electronic version of this book is freely available thanks to the support of libraries working with Knowledge Unlatched, a collaborative initiative designed to make high-quality books open access for the public good. This open access book analyses intercultural dialogue as a concept, policy and ideal in European education policy documentation. The core European transnational organizatons – the Council of Europe and the European Union – have actively promoted policies to engender inclusive societies and respond to challenges that diversification may entail. This book, in turn, offers suggestions for improving education policies in super-diversified Europe and beyond, where there is an increasing need for cultural understanding and constructive dialogue. The authors utilize concept analysis to reveal how these organizations seek to deal with dialogue between cultures, as well as weight given to cultural differences and intercultural encounters. In het eerste deel wordt ingegaan op de Chinese cultuur en maatschappij : onderwerpen als geografie en bevolking, geschiedenis, taal, cultuurverschillen met het Westen, filosofie en politiek worden besproken. This open access book is a result of an extensive, ambitious and wide-ranging pan-European project focusing on the development of children and young people’s cultural literacy and what it means to be European in the 21st century prioritising intercultural dialogue and mutual understanding. The Horizon 2020 funded, 3-year DIalogue and Argumentation for cultural Literacy Learning (DIALLS) project included ten partners from countries in and around Europe with the aim to centralise co-constructive dialogue as a main cultural literacy value and to promote tolerance, empathy and inclusion. This is achieved through teaching children in schools from a young age to engage together in discussions where they may have differing viewpoints or perspectives, to enable a growing awareness of their own cultural identities, and those of others. Central to the project is children’s engagement with wordless picture books and films, which are used as stimuli for discussions around core cultural themes such as social responsibility, living together and sustainable development. In order to enable intercultural dialogue in action, the project developed an online platform as a tool for engagement across classes, and which this book elaborates on. The book explores themes underpinning this unique interdisciplinary project, drawing together scholars from cultural studies, civics education and linguistics, psychologists, socio-cultural literacy researchers, teacher educators and digital learning experts. Each chapter of the book explores a theme that is common to the project, and celebrates its interdisciplinarity by exploring these themes through different lenses.
