Having a job is not always a guarantee of protection from poverty, for oneself and one's family. This depends on the one hand on the level of income acquired through work, on the other hand on the family situation of the worker. While a low income from work does not always lead to poverty in terms of consumption, if the worker can also access other income within the family, vice versa an average income may not be sufficient if it is the only one in a family in which there are different components. Low or intermittent income from work, on the one hand, high incidence of single-income families, especially if there are more children, on the other, are among the main causes of poverty despite work. Above all, the second phenomenon explains why Italy is among the European countries with a relatively high percentage of poor family-based workers, from which the high incidence of child poverty also derives.

At the place known as Head-Smashed-In in southwestern Alberta, Aboriginal people practiced a form of group hunting for nearly 6,000 years before European contact. The large communal bison traps of the Plains were the single greatest food-getting method ever developed in human history. Hunters, working with their knowledge of the land and of buffalo behaviour, drove their quarry over a cliff and into wooden corrals. The rest of the group butchered the kill in the camp below. Author Jack Brink, who devoted 25 years of his career to "The Jump," has chronicled the cunning, danger, and triumph in t
