The end of the Cold War in 1991 brought the United States more than two decades of global leadership and prosperity. Neorealist international relations theory correctly predicted that hegemony, although the most stable power arrangement, is doomed to deteriorate as rising competitors band together to challenge the existing world order. As the United States pivots from hegemony to competition, the Department of Defense is adjusting its capabilities to confront the Chinese Communist Party and the Russian oligarchy. The U.S. Marine Corps may be considered at the forefront of the rapidly changing force structure. These changes will not rely on the acquisition of new weapons systems for success. Instead, the capacity of Marines to accommodate new ways of thinking, norming chaotic processes, and adapt to dynamic operational environments will determine their outcome. This volume provides a window into how current and future Marine leaders will grapple with this historic challenge.

This is an age of crisis: economic, political, environmental, and social. Yet the nature of contemporary crisis is often misunderstood. Crisis, rather than being accidental or episodic -- as is too often assumed -- has been a regular feature of state practice in the neoliberal austerity regimes of contemporary capitalism. In this timely work Jeff Shantz gives special attention to the particular manufactured crises associated with austerity regimes and conditions of precarity within contemporary capitalism, and how Crisis States differ from other forms of state practice.Crisis is a powerful weapon of states and capital in the pursuit of accumulation, exploitation, and control. Engaging insights from anarchism and autonomous Marxism, Shantz lays bare the real nature and character of crisis as political and social pursuits of state and capital under precarious capitalism.Attention is also given to social resistance under crisis state conditions. Contemporary capitalism renders the oppressed and exploited precarious at the same time as opportunities are opened to render the system itself precarious. Understanding Crisis States and precarious capitalism is crucial in considering prospects for resistance.

Although military policy seems focused on overseas threats, defending the ""homeland"" is, of course, the ultimate objective. This guide examines emergent threats to the USA homeland such as speciality weapons, cyber attacks and ballistic missiles and delineates the army's responsibilities.

Ceci n’est pas une tragédieis the first monograph dedicated to the particularly innovative American writer David Markson and includes all his work from 1956 to 2007. David Markson updates the form of the novel to make a statement about our era, the fragmentation of its culture, the questions being asked and its successes and failures. From his parody of the western and his detective novels of the 1960s, or his experiences with constrained writing in the 1970s, to his most recent narratives, amongst them Wittgenstein’s mistress and This is not a novel, Markson plays with the form of the novel, parodying, fragmenting and redefining it. Close to the monody of Greek tragedy, but lacking the coherence of a well-defined universe, his narrative voice establishes a particular autobiographical pact, which goes beyond the individual, in the uncertain Post-Holocaust world. Between what Italo Calvino…
