This book, generated by the creation of a database on the population of enterprises and their characteristics, illustrates the process of development of the Arezzo gold and jewellery system. It is a significant case in view of its international prestige and the use of highly specialized manpower, and at the same time interesting in terms of type, since it represents an emerging district produced by gemmation from a large enterprise. The analysis offers insight into the process of district development and a methodological support for further investigations. At the same time, it also represents a tool for an understanding of the long-term economic dynamics characterizing one of the most vital productive areas of Tuscany.

The fil rouge of the work concerns the transformations of political professionalism, investigated through a particular category of politicians: the mayors of three municipalities in the provincial capitals of Tuscany, elected between 1994 and 2009. The reconstruction of the debate on the phenomenon, the legislative requirements and the regional political geography are the theoretical pillars on which the dual purpose of the research is based: first, to analyse the profile of the mayors in a diachronic perspective, and second, to interpret the different levels of political professionalism. The first perspective allows to illustrate the generational differences between the mayors after the introduction of the law 83/931. The second perspective focuses on the characteristics of the actors - defined on the basis of four dimensions of a continuum - and on the professionalisation of politics.

During late Middle Ages the space corresponding to Papal State showed some features similar to those of Central-Northern Italy, sharing others with the Southern Kingdom. This interesting mix can be tested observing statutory law, that, regarding this period, has abundantly survived, although revealing remarkable regional differences. The interplay between cities and villages in this situation is complicated by Papal power, which participates in that relationship, affecting it with a varying intensity and continuity. In this book we try to specify the “three parts game” that happened during the legislative process, considering also other players action, such rural lords. The work includes four essays about the four lands forming the Papal State and other three about nearer lands, i.e. Florentine Tuscany, Siennese one and the Sicilian Kingdom (reserving a special attention at Abruzzo), and suggests useful comparisons, one of the project paramount aims. The scholars invited to join the enterprise, each specialist of a single land, during their research considered other’s results, notwithstanding the physical distance among each other. Thus, we try to offer a homogeneous picture, at least regarding powers interplay dynamics.

In a perspective of local history that combines problem analysis with a reconstruction accessible even to non-specialists, this book addresses the economy, society and institutions of a rural community of the Tuscan Apennines. The community of Raggiolo is portrayed over a long span of time ranging from the late centuries of the Middle Ages up to the end of the eighteenth century. We are thus offered a picture of the Casentino mountains which reveals - in the centuries-old intertwining of mountain economy, social equality, sharing of the management of the local administration and the goods belonging to the collectivity - one of the main reasons for the resistance to change which was to mark the end of the ancien regime.
