In Italy, Solidarity Villages are state-provided places of accommodation for Romani people. In Rome, they are typically fenced off areas equipped with low-quality portable housing. In the media, these halting sites are often represented as a culturally appropriate housing solution. Yet, these camps are neither temporary halting places nor cultural forms of housing. Rather, they are places of segregation, conflict and negotiation—sites where racism, sexism and a particular way of dealing with poverty and migration condense. Beginning with the declaration of a Nomad Emergency in 2008, Simona Pagano documents the emergence of the spatial logic of the camp and offers an intersectional analysis of the complex power relations that shape the lives of its female residents. Drawing on ethnographic engagement, as well as interviews with institutional actors and civil society organizations, Pagano shows that the camps are often places of segregation and control, of profit generation and violence, but also, spaces of solidarity, homemaking and friendship. Als Dörfer der Solidarität werden insbesondere in Rom, meist mit Wohncontainern ausgestattete, eingezäunte Camps bezeichnet, in denen Rom_nja und Sint_izze institutionell untergebracht werden. Medial sind diese vielbeachtet, die Bewohner_innen werden stereotypisiert noch immer als „Nomaden“ kategorisiert, die als solche spezifischer Wohnmöglichkeiten - nämlich ihrer Halteplätze - bedürfen. Doch sind diese Camps weniger Halteplätze und kulturell spezifische Wohnform, als vielmehr Orte der Segregation sowie Konflikt- und Aushandlungsräume. In ihnen verdichten sich unterschiedliche Machtverhältnisse, wie Rassismus und Sexismus, aber auch ein spezifischer Umgang mit Armut und Migration. Ausgehend von der Ausrufung des Notstands in Bezug auf die Anwesenheit der „Nomaden“ im Jahre 2008, untersucht Simona Pagano in dieser Monographie die Auswirkungen dieser Machtverhältnisse insbesondere auf den Alltag der bislang zu gering berücksichtigten weiblichen Bewohnerinnen dieser Camps in Rom. In der alltäglichen Begleitung der Frauen, in Gesprächen, Interviews mit zivilgesellschaftlichen Organisationen und institutionellen Akteuren sowie durch das Nachzeichnen der Entstehung dieser Orte vermittelt die Autorin anhand einer intersektionalen Perspektive ein komplexes Bild dieser Camps. Sie kann dabei zeigen, dass diese zwar Orte der Segregation und Kontrolle, der Profitgenerierung und Gewalt, aber auch Räume der Solidarität, der Beheimatung und der Freundschaft sein können.

The book outlines the historical, political and pedagogical reality of growing segregation and racial isolation in America's 21st century public schools. It explores the dialectic between the philosophies of inclusion and exclusion, examining an underlying contradiction: public education that continually postures to be ever more inclusive while simultaneously perpetuating an exclusive system through systematized discrimination to maintain inequality. The book concludes that undoing re-segregation is imperative to achieve social justice and a better education for all children.

A Gender Budget is a strategic tool that provides an assessment of the political-economic and financial decisions of public administration from a gender-sensitive perspective. Its main goal is to support a more efficient, transparent, and equitable, management of resources. The first Gender Budget of the Università degli Studi di Napoli “Federico II” (UNINA) was realized within the framework of the European-Union funded GENOVATE research project: Transforming Organizational Culture for Gender Equality in Research and Innovation. It consists in a thorough context analysis of the University enrolment and career policy outcomes, encompassing students, academic, technical and administrative staff, which results in a detailed map of the still relevant gender gap dimension in the institution. Raw data and their focused analysis show how cultural and structural barriers contribute to women dropping out of university at the very beginning of scientific careers (i.e. the so-called ‘leaky pipeline’ phenomenon). Due to horizontal and vertical segregation mechanisms, some disciplinary fields and academic positions still remain dominated by one gender. It is the authors’ hope that Gender Budgeting may become a well-established practice at UNINA, and may support transformative actions and inspire gender-mainstreaming institutional policies. GENOVATE is a project funded by the European Commission within the Seventh Framework Programme (FP7), under the Science in Society grant programme (SiS 2012 2.1.1-1). Dès la deuxième moitié du xixe siècle, dans un contexte d’intense ségrégation raciale aux États-Unis, des Africains-Américains écrivent l’histoire occultée de leur communauté pour l’inscrire au cœur du récit national et, au-delà, pour révéler la contribution de la diaspora noire à l’histoire mondiale. Cette histoire en marge questionne la discipline historique elle-même et affirme la nécessité d’écrire une histoire-monde. Mais comment écrire une véritable histoire globale? Ce livre entend démontrer qu’il faut non seulement donner droit de cité à celles et ceux qui ont trop souvent été exclus du récit historique ou ont été relégués à ses marges, mais aussi concevoir la marge (géographique, sociale, économique) comme un centre d’innovation épistémologique et politique, un lieu paradoxalement privilégié pour (re)penser et (ré)écrire l’histoire. Depuis plus d’un siècle à travers le monde, des historiens et des historiennes placent la périphérie au centre et, par là même, déprovincialisent l’histoire. Ce sont ces travaux qui, faisant l’histoire des marges (sexuelles-genrées, impériales-coloniales, scientifiques-disciplinaires...), participent à l’écriture d’une histoire globale.

In natural environments, the auditory system is typically confronted with a mixture of sounds originating from different sound sources. As sounds spread over time, the auditory system has to continuously decompose competing sounds into distinct meaningful auditory objects or “auditory streams” referring to certain sound sources. This decomposition work, which was termed by Albert Bregman as “Auditory scene analysis” (ASA), involves two kinds of grouping to be done. Grouping based on simultaneous cues, such as harmonicity and on sequential cues, such as similarity in acoustic features over time. Understanding how the brain solves these tasks is a fundamental challenge facing auditory scientist. In recent years, the topic of ASA was broadly investigated in different fields of auditory research, including a wide range of methods, studies in different species, and modeling. Despite the advance in understanding ASA, it still proves to be a major challenge for auditory research. This includes verifying whether experimental findings are transferable to more realistic auditory scenes. A central approach in understanding ASA is the use of certain stimulus parameters that produce an ambiguous percept. The advantage of such an approach is that different perceptual organizations can be studied without varying physical stimulus parameters. Additionally, the perception of ambiguous stimuli can be volitionally controlled by intention or task. By using this one can mirror real hearing situations where listeners intent to identify and to localize auditory sources. Recently it was also found that in classical auditory streaming sequences perceptual ambiguity was not restricted to but was observed over a broad range of stimulus parameters. The proposed Research Topic pursues to bring together scientist in the different fields of auditory research whose work addresses the issue of perceptual ambiguity. Researchers were welcome to contribute experimental reports, computational modeling, and reviews that consider auditory ambiguity in its modality specific characteristics as well as in comparison to visual ambiguous figures. The overall goal of contributions was to consider the experimental findings from the perspective of real auditory scenes. In a broader sense, the Research Topic was open for contributions which are related to the issue of active listening in complex scenes.

Aux États-Unis, la notion de race est utilisée de manière routinière par les médecins en tant que variable biologique, culturelle ou sociale, selon les situations de soins. Croisant les notions de citoyenneté, de responsabilité et de droits civiques, ainsi que les questionnements autour de la politisation de la science, cet ouvrage retrace l’histoire de la médicalisation du corps noir par la profession psychiatrique aux États-Unis, du xxe siècle jusqu’à l’époque contemporaine. Conjuguant l’histoire et la sociologie, il est ainsi question de retracer les différents régimes par lesquels la notion de race a été jugée pertinente par les psychiatres pour naturaliser les différences corporelles des années 1920 jusqu’à l’époque contemporaine. En s’appuyant sur un corpus d’archives personnelles de médecins, d’institutions de soins et de centres de recherche en psychiatrie, ainsi que sur une enquête qualitative réalisée auprès de psychiatres en Californie, ce livre démontre que la catégorie de race irrigue encore et toujours les pratiques et les discours institutionnels, aussi bien dans les représentations que les médecins véhiculent des corps soignés, que dans les stratégies de naturalisation du social employées pour prendre en charge leurs patients.
