Abstract

Jiuzhaigou was inscribed by UNESCO as a World Natural Heritage Site in 1992 for its lakes and waterfalls, colorful travertine landscape and unique cultural features. It belongs to Category V (protected landscape) in the IUCN system of categorizing protected areas. Diatoms, a large group of eukaryotic (with a membrane-bound nucleus) microalgae and the most common photosynthesizers (they produce their own food in the same way as plants), are the most important group for maintaining the unique travertine ecosystems in aquatic biotopes. Due to their great diversity and the expertise required for their identification, the diatoms of Jiuzhaigou have been rarely and incompletely studied.Atlas mainly provides a comprehensive diatom collection of Jiuzhaigou National Nature Reserve in the text form for diatom identification, with accompanying microscope images and alphabetical Latin names of the species list in the appendix. At the same time, it briefly introduces the basic information about Jiuzhaigou National Nature Reserve and general facts about diatoms to readers at home and abroad. This book can be used for reference and study by researchers and students in universities, institutes and other professional institutions, as well as by professionals engaged in lake biology and environmental protection.

Abstract

Mosses are one of the most ancient terrestrial plants. Their small size and rich species have increased the difficulty in classification and thus there are still many taxonomic issues to be solved. The moss genus Ulota provides a good example in this regard. Engaged in the world taxonomic revision of this epiphytic moss for many years, the authors present the main conclusions of their research in this book. It not only introduces the taxonomy, phylogeny and evolution of Ulota, but also provides detailed and comprehensive information on the 50 species confirmed in this study, illustrated and accompanied by beautiful color photos, SEM images and distribution maps. This book brings together the latest findings of Ulota and useful reference for species classification for professionals and amateurs.

Abstract

"Fruit fly (Diptera: Tephritidae) pests have a profound impact on horticultural production and economy of many countries. It is fundamental to understand their biology and evaluate methods for their suppression, containment, or eradication. Area-Wide Management of Fruit Fly Pests comprises contributions from scientists from around the world on several species of tephritids working on diverse subjects with a focus on area-wide management of these pests. The first three sections of the book explore aspects of the biology, ecology, physiology, behavior, taxonomy, and morphology of fruit flies. The next two sections provide evidence on the efficacy of attractants, risk assessment, quarantine, and post-harvest control methods. The fifth and sixth sections examine biological control methods such as the Sterile Insect Technique and the use of natural enemies of fruit flies. The seventh section focuses on area-wide integrated pest management and action programs. Finally, the eighth section examines social, economic, and policy issues of action programs aimed at involving the wider community in the control of these pests and facilitate the development of control programs. Features: Presents information on the biology of tephritid flies. Provides knowledge on the use of natural enemies of fruit flies for their biological control. Includes research results on models and diets used for the Sterile Insect Technique. Reports developments on the chemical ecology of fruit flies that contribute to make control methods more specific and efficient. Reviews subjects such as Holistic Pest Management and Area-Wide Management Programs including social, economic, and policy issues in various countries"--

Abstract

The International Conference on Phytochemistry, Textile, & Renewable Energy Technologies for Sustainable Development (ICPTRE 2020) was hosted by the World bank funded Africa Centre of Excellence in Phytochemicals, Textile and Renewable Energy (ACEII-PTRE) based at Moi University in conjunction with Donghua University, China and the Sino-Africa International Symposium on Textiles and Apparel (SAISTA). The theme of the conference was Advancing Science, Technology and Innovation for Industrial Growth. The research relationships between universities and industry have enabled the two entities to flourish and, in the past, have been credited for accelerated sustainable development and uplifting of millions out poverty. ICPTRE 2020 therefore provided a platform for academic researchers drawn from across the world to meet key industry professionals and actively share knowledge while advancing the role of research in industrial development, particularly, in the developing nations. The conference also provided exhibitors with an opportunity to interact with professionals and showcase their business, products, technologies and equipment. During the course of the conference, industrial exhibitions, research papers and presentations in the fields of phytochemistry, textiles, renewable energy, industry, science, technology, innovations and much more were presented.
