Abstract

"Open Rivers: Rethinking the Mississippi is an interdisciplinary online journal that recognizes the Mississippi River as a space for timely and critical conversations about people, community, water, and place. The project's title, Open Rivers, speaks to its multi-vocal and multi-media nature ("open"), its attention to systems and components, stories and frameworks that make up the Mississippi River ("river" understood as a natural and human/cultural system), and to the genre of the work itself, a digital journal. Because of the inherent nature of rivers to disregard state and international borders, the title of our journal refers to more than just the Mississippi. We welcome contributions and conversations relating to other rivers around the world, as well"--About Open Rivers page.

Abstract

Many of the challenges facing farmers and human communities from hydrographical basins are not new. But, due to the fact that the nature and extents of the problems vary from one region to another and from one basin to another, the responses are highly diversified. There is no generally valid solution for all the problems. However, in addressing issues on ensuring the prevention or mitigation of the destructive consequences of flood damage or prolonged drought as for the optimal use of water by consumers, sustainable basin land use, biodiversity conservation, and environment protection as well, fourteen specialists and their colleagues present the state of the art in these important matters and new possible solutions to solve, identified from the scientific investigations undertaken.

Abstract

"Implementing International Watercourses Law through the WEF and SDGs: An Integrated Approach Illustrated in the Zambezi River Basin offers an innovative approach to the governance of shared watercourses and the implementation of international water law through the Law, Nexus and Goals (LNG) approach. By looking at policy frameworks such as the WEF nexus and global development agendas such as the SDGs, the monograph provides a method of integration for holistic water governance. In order to demonstrate this approach, a case study of the Zambezi River Basin is used, through which the monograph not only exemplifies the approach taken, but also provides a detailed account of the legal and policy frameworks within the basin"--

Abstract

South Asia which is home to two of the largest river basins in the world has a long history of urban settlements. Several holy towns, believed to be the dwelling places of divine forces have come up along the banks of its rivers as have capital cities and centres of trade. By a study of seven cities and the rivers that flow through them, from Sehwan Sharif on the plains of the Indus in Pakistan to Guwahati on the banks of the Brahmaputra in the state of Assam, from Varanasi and Delhi based respectively in the valleys of the Ganges and the Yamuna to Madurai which lies along the banks of the Vaigai in South India while passing through the pilgrimage centres of Amarkantaka and Omkareshwara on the Narmada basin in Central India, this work explores the multiplicity of the visions and emotions that are generated by the practices and land development along the urban river banks. This collective volume proposes to make a multidisciplinary appraisal of this unique heritage which is today threatened by a rapidly expanding population and pollution as well as of the contemporary mutually contradictory perceptions of devotees and tourists, local actors and national level decision makers and shanty town dwellers and members of the urban middle class.

Abstract

Most freshwater aquatic ecosystems have focused on open-water conditions, during spring, summer, and autumn. Studies in winter during ice-covered conditions are sparse due to the logistic difficulties of sampling during freezing weather and the assumption that these ecosystems are biologically inactive during winter. There is growing evidence, however, that ice conditions can have strong impacts on the flora, fauna, and water quality of freshwater systems, dependent on the severity and duration of the winter season. The magnitude of winter conditions and the duration of the ice-covered period can also set the stage of the biological succession of flora, fauna and water-quality constituents in the subsequent spring and summer seasons (e.g., higher probability of early algal blooms with earlier ice-off dates). Climate change and changes in the type and degree of anthropogenic impacts will also influence the ice regime and hence the ecosystems of northern freshwater systems. This Special Issue provides a venue to report new findings in field-based and modelling research to highlight the importance of the ice regime and ice-induced hydraulic regime of rivers and lakes on their aquatic ecosystems.

Abstract

"This is an open access title available under the terms of a CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 License. It is free to read, download and share at Elgaronline. Centralising the role of land and landowners, Spatial Flood Risk Management brings together knowledge from socio-economy, public policy, hydrology, geomorphology, and engineering to establish an interdisciplinary knowledge base on spatial approaches to managing flood risks. Discussing key barriers and sharing evidence-based best practices to flood risk management, international contributors involved in the LAND4FLOOD EU COST action initiative (CA16209) seek transferrable solutions to the implementation challenges of nature-based solutions. Introducing the concept of spatial flood risk management, the multi-national teams of authors consider the notion of land through three analytical lenses: as a biophysical system, a socio-economic resource, and a solution to flood risk management. Advocating for a more comprehensive approach, the book explores options of where and how to store water within catchments, including decentralized water retention in the hinterland, flood storage along rivers, and planned flooding in resilient cities. Bringing together the existing knowledge on the relation between flood risk management and land with an international and interdisciplinary scope, this book will prove invaluable to academics, policy makers and public authorities involved in flood risk management, urban planners, and governing environmental bodies"--

Abstract

The mitigation of oil spills is an important facet of environmental protection. Understanding oil spills is a first step toward preventing and minimizing their damage to the environment. This compilation presents several of the current studies related to such an understanding of oil spills and the environment. This book is a compilation of 14 papers presenting new developments in the field of oil spills, giving insight into the rapidly changing world of oil spill studies and technology. The 14 papers included cover topics varying from risk analysis to oil spill remote sensing. Broadly categorized, included are six papers on modeling, four papers on remote sensing, three papers on risk assessment, and one paper on oil spill countermeasures. Each paper presents a unique insight into a facet of oil spill research and technology. The authors of these papers represent many different countries and affiliations around the world.
