Abstract

Part of a continuing study of Soviet R&D of high-current, high-energy charged-particle beams and their scientific and technological applications, this report discusses pulsed-power devices and elements, the basic means of energy delivery to all charged-particle beam systems. Specifically, it treats pulsed-power generation, storage, and switching. Soviet technical literature since 1960 was examined for data detailing both the organization and planning of Soviet pulsed-power R&D and the theory, testing, and operation of pulsed-power equipment. The author concludes that the USSR is engaged in a major effort to develop pulsed-power systems for (1) controlled thermonuclear reactions as a national energy source and (2) military applications. Appendixes list pulsed-power facilities and published staff authors by research area and alphabetical order.

Abstract

The storage and conversion of energy represents one of the major scientific challenges for coming decades with high stakes for the environment. Which new materials will enable the construction of more efficient and “cleaner” batteries? Jean-Marie Tarascon takes stock of these questions with their implications for our future and that of the planet. He notably discusses lithium-ion technology, the contribution of nanotechnologies and current research into using bio-inspired methods to develop material such as electrode material obtained from the biomass by scientists working in the field of “green chemistry”.

Abstract

This book gathers the results of an interdisciplinary research project led by the Swiss Competence Centers for Energy Research (SCCER CREST) and jointly implemented by several universities. It identifies political, economic and legal challenges and opportunities in the energy transition from a governance perspective by exploring a variety of tools that allow state, non-state and transnational actors to manage the transition of the energy industry toward less fossil-fuel reliance. When analyzing the roles of these actors, the authors examine not only formal procedures such as political and democratic processes, but also market behavior and societal practices. In other words, the handbook focuses on both the behavior and the positive and normative frameworks of political actors, bureaucracies, courts, international organizations, lobby groups, civil society, economic actors and individuals. The authors subsequently use their findings to formulate specific guidelines for lawmakers and other rule-makers, as well as private and public actors. To do so, they draw on approaches stemming from the legal, political and management sciences.
