Ce livre est un hommage, rendu à deux géographes physiciens prématurément disparus, par vingt-six collègues, amis et élèves. Poursuivre leurs combats, leurs recherches, leurs rêves ... pour ne pas oublier. Ils partageaient le souci d'un enseignement de la géographie physique rénovée, initiant les jeunes à une démarche rigoureuse, clairement différenciée des sciences connexes par le souci permanent de spatialisation. Aussi la première partie de cet ouvrage est consacrée à la place de la géographie dans les cursus et la place de la géographie physique dans la géographie. Ils avaient parcouru, travaillé, aimé le monde méditerranéen. Milieux instables, divers, éminemment géographiques puisque les faits naturels et culturels y sont indissociables dans les paysages. Il est donc logique de suivre ce sillon maritime et de présenter des recherches récentes sur ces régions.

In particular, the event was characterized by the search for technical and instrumental solutions to problems related to: energy production in the coastal area, morphology and evolution of coastlines, flora and fauna of the littoral system, management and integrated coastal protection, coastline geography, human influence on coastal landscape. Fabrizio Benincasagraduated in electronic engineering, Research Director at National Research Council (CNR) of Italy, former founder and director of the CNR-Institute for the Monitoring of Agroecosystems of Sassari (now section of the Institute of Biometeorology - IBIMET of Florence). He has always dealt with instrumentation for the measurement of physical environmental parameters, producing about 160 scientific publications, including about twenty books.

This open access book prepared by a joint working group committed to critical research on dryland social-ecological systems (SESs) presents a timely synthesis of up-to-date knowledge in various thematic fields relevant to dryland SESs. It aims to organize key salient concepts and establish a conceptual framework relevant to the interdisciplinary and cross-cultural understanding of dryland SESs, which have specific contexts and a geographically representative structure. Through synthesizing research across the world and analyzing scientific evidence for good practices, it has the potential to promote collaboration among global researchers as well as communication with policy makers, managers, and practitioners for dryland ecosystem management to promote sustainability. It calls for synergies between different sectors and countries to achieve Sustainable Development Goals in drylands. .
