Abstract

Cultural heritage plays a key role in understanding the history of humankind; therefore, the adoption of appropriate strategies for its conservation is essential. Microorganisms, such as bacteria, fungi and microalgae, which are usually organized on the surface in microbial communities as “biofilms”, can cause serious problems in the conservation of cultural heritage, making the adoption of prevention and conservation strategies a critical issue. This editorial focuses on studies published within the present Special Issue that present advances in the field of the biodeterioration of cultural heritage caused by microbial communities, with a particular focus on new methods for their elimination and control.

Abstract

The importance of viticulture and the winemaking socio-economic sector is acknowledged worldwide. The most renowned winemaking regions show very specific environmental characteristics, where climate usually plays a central role. Considering the strong influence of weather and climatic factors on grapevine yields and berry quality attributes, climate change may indeed significantly impact this crop. Recent trends already point to a pronounced increase in growing season mean temperatures, as well as changes in precipitation regimes, which have been influencing wine typicity across some of the most renowned winemaking regions worldwide. Moreover, several climate scenarios give evidence of enhanced stress conditions for grapevine growth until the end of the century. Although grapevines have high resilience, the clear evidence for significant climate change in the upcoming decades urges adaptation and mitigation measures to be taken by sector stakeholders. To provide hints on the abovementioned issues, we have edited a Special Issue entitled “Viticulture and Winemaking under Climate Change”. Contributions from different fields were considered, including crop and climate modeling, and potential adaptation measures against these threats. The current Special Issue allows for the expansion of scientific knowledge in these particular fields of research, as well as providing a path for future research.

Abstract

This SI presents the latest achievements, challenges and prospects for drives, actuators, sensors, controls and robot navigation with reverse validation and applications in the field of industrial automation and robotics. Automation, supported by robotics, can effectively speed up and improve production. The industrialization of complex mechatronic components, especially robots, requires a large number of special processes already in the pre-production stage provided by modelling and simulation. This area of research from the very beginning includes drives, process technology, actuators, sensors, control systems and all connections in mechatronic systems. Automation and robotics form broad-spectrum areas of research, which are tightly interconnected. To reduce costs in the pre-production stage and to reduce production preparation time, it is necessary to solve complex tasks in the form of simulation with the use of standard software products and new technologies that allow, for example, machine vision and other imaging tools to examine new physical contexts, dependencies and connections.

Abstract

The 3D printing (3DP) process was patented in 1986; however, only in the last decade has it begun to be used for medical applications, as well as in the fields of prosthetics, bio-fabrication, and pharmaceutical printing. 3DP or additive manufacturing (AM) is a family of technologies that implement layer-by-layer processes in order to fabricate physical models based on a computer aided design (CAD) model. 3D printing permits the fabrication of high degrees of complexity with great reproducibility in a fast and cost-effective fashion. 3DP technology offers a new paradigm for the direct manufacture of individual dosage forms and has the potential to allow for variations in size and geometry as well as control dose and release behavior. Furthermore, the low cost and ease of use of 3DP systems means that the possibility of manufacturing medicines and medical devices at the point of dispensing or at the point of use could become a reality. 3DP thus offers the perfect innovative manufacturing route to address the critical capability gap that hinders the widespread exploitation of personalized medicines for molecules that are currently not easy to deliver. This Special Issue will address new developments in the area of 3D printing and bioprinting for drug delivery applications, covering the recent advantages and future directions of additive manufacturing for pharmaceutical products.

Abstract

De wet van 29 juli 1991 betreffende de uitdrukkelijke motivering van de bestuurshandelingen is een bijzonder korte, maar uiterst belangrijke wet. Sinds de inwerkingtreding van deze wet moeten immers quasi alle bestuurshandelingen met individuele strekking zoals een vergunning, een erkenning, een benoeming, een ontslag, een administratieve sanctie, een onteigening,… formeel worden gemotiveerd. Dit wil zeggen dat in de beslissing zelf de feitelijke en juridische overwegingen moeten worden vermeld die aan de beslissing ten grondslag liggen. Deze motivering moet bovendien afdoende zijn. Maar wat is een afdoende motivering? De draagwijdte van deze vage norm wordt in duizenden arresten van de Raad van State en andere administratieve en burgerlijke rechtscolleges verduidelijkt. Het boek bestaat uit twee delen: In een eerste, algemeen deel beschrijven Prof. Ingrid Opdebeek en Ann Coolsaet op algemene wijze de doelstellingen, het toepassingsgebied, de aard en de draagwijdte van de motiveringsplicht en de sancties bij de schending van de wet. De Wet Motivering Bestuurshandelingen kent echter zijn specifieke toepassingsproblemen in de diverse rechtstakken die mede door het algemeen bestuursrecht worden beheerst. Daarom wordt dit algemeen deel aangevuld met een bijzonder deel waarin diverse deskundigen de Wet Motivering Bestuurshandelingen onderzoeken op het domein van de ruimtelijke ordening, het milieurecht, de onteigening, het fiscaal recht, het socialezekerheidsrecht, het overheidsopdrachtenrecht, het onderwijsrecht, het bestuurlijk toezicht, het vreemdelingenrecht, het ambtenarenrecht en het contractueel overheidspersoneel.
