Abstract

Scents can carry a lot of important information about the environment, conspecifics and other species. While some of these scents are positively related, as the odor of food, mating partners, or familiar conspecifics, other scents are associated with negative situations and events, e.g. the occurrence of a predator, an aggressive territorial conspecific or spoiled food. The present research topic is focused on such “scents that matter”, i.e., scents that are crucial for the survival of an organism. Since many years, the importance of scents always attracts scientists to investigate how scents affect the behavior of mammals, via which mechanisms scents are perceived and how scents modulate neural circuitries responsible for behavior. We believe that this research topic gives a nice overview on current ‘olfactory research.’ Many of the contributions are focused on scents with aversive effects, i.e. kairomones or pheromones that warn about potential threats. These studies range from research articles identifying new active odor components of predator odors, describing the induced behavioral changes and the underlying neuroanatomical and neurochemical mechanisms, to review articles summarizing the findings of the last decades on this field. Other articles are focused on the effects of scents in social behaviors or on associative learning. This research topic also represents nicely the current combination of methodological approaches in ‘olfactory research’: cell biologists, geneticists, behavioral pharmacologists, neuroanatomists, and computational modelers work effectively together to unravel the mechanisms of how scents matters in humans and animals.

Abstract

Odours are powerful stimuli that can evoke emotional states, and support learning and memory. Decades of research have indicated that the neural basis for this strong “odour-emotional memory” connection is due to the uniqueness of the anatomy of the olfactory pathways. Indeed, unlike the other sensory systems, the sense of smell does not pass through the thalamus to be routed to the cortex. Rather, odour information is relayed directly to the limbic system, a brain region typically associated with memory and emotional processes. This provides olfaction with a unique and potent power to influence mood, acquisition of new information, and use of information in many different contexts. including social interactions. Indeed, olfaction is crucially involved in behaviours essential for survival of the individual and species, including identification of predators, recognition of individuals for procreation or social hierarchy, location of food, as well as attachment between mating pairs and infant-caretaker dyads. Importantly, odours are sampled through sniffing behaviour. This active sensing plays an important role in exploratory behaviours observed in the different contexts mentioned above. Odours are also critical for learning and memory about events and places and constitute efficient retrieval cues for the recall of emotional episodic memories. This broad role for odours appears highly preserved across species. In addition, the consistent early developmental emergence of the olfactory function across diverse species also provides a unique window of opportunity for analysis of myriad behavioural systems from rodents to nonhuman primates and humans. This combined with the relatively conserved organization of the olfactory system in mammals, provides a powerful framework to explore how complex behaviours can be modulated by odours to produce adaptative responses, and to investigate the underlying neural networks. In this research topic, we welcome original and review articles, as well as opinion, methods and modelling papers from both human and animal research, covering the following issues (although the list is not exhaustive):• Neural and pharmacological bases of olfactory memory : in adulthood and through development• Olfactory-based social interactions: mother-offspring bonding, pair bonding, peer recognition, social hierarchy, social transmission of fear…• Emotional olfactory memory: conditioned odour fear, unconditioned odour fear, alarm pheromones…• Sniffing behaviour and its modulation during olfactory learning and/or social behaviours. The goal of this Research Topic is to bring together cutting edge research on diverse species and developmental stages, highlighting convergence and divergence between humans and animals to facilitate translational research.

Abstract

Smell is one of the most sensitive senses and is closely connected with emotions. Everyone has experienced a moment where a scent changed their mood and brought up memories. In this book monitoring of the effect of aromas on consumer emotions is described. It starts with a general overview of the role of scents in marketing and the use of neuroscience tools in monitoring the impact of the stimuli on consumer emotions. Tools used by the authors are a consumer neuroscience tool - electroencephalography (EEG), a biometric method that monitors the galvanic skin response or skin perspiration (GSR), and a traditional data collection method - a questionnaire. With these tools, consumer response to three selected scents were monitored. One of the initial scents was selected and tested under ‘normal’ restaurant conditions. The authors describe how the information was obtained, and how the effect on consumer emotions was determined. 'The use of consumer neuroscience in aroma marketing' concludes with recommendations to improve the effectiveness of aromatisation in practice.

Abstract

Environmental odour is perceived as a major nuisance by rural as well as urban populations. The sources of odourous substances are manifold. In urban areas, these include restaurants, small manufacturing trades, and other sources, which might cause complaints. In the suburbs, wastewater treatment plants, landfill sites, and other infrastructures are the expected major odour sources. These problems are often caused be the accelerated growth of cities. In rural sites, livestock farming and the spreading of manure on the fields is blamed for severe odour annoyance. In fact, environmental odours are considered to be a common cause of public complaints by residents to local authorities, regional, or national environmental agencies. This Special Issue of Atmosphere will address the entire chain, from the quantification of odour sources, abatement methods, the dilution in the atmosphere, and the assessment of odour exposure for the assessment of annoyance. In particular, this Special Issue aims to encourage contributions dealing with field trials and dispersion modeling to assess the degree of annoyance and the quantitative success of abatement measures.

Abstract

What if researchers interested in 'the past' used their noses? This open access book makes the case for a more imaginatively interdisciplinary approach to sensory heritage and history, arguing that we can and should engage our noses as a research tool for articulating the past. Assessing how both we and our ancestors approach, understand and conceptualise smell, Tullett shows how archives can be 're-odorized' to uncover narratives that are only implicit in or obscured by the historical record. From perfume libraries to organic compounds emitted by historical objects, this book acts as a guide for employing our olfactory senses when researching and studying history in order to understand and communicate the past more fully. Employing 'olfactory figures' examples, Smell and the Past shows how historical narratives and arguments can be found through a structured olfactory experience, and demonstrates how our understanding of the past and its relationship with the present is enriched by opening our minds and using our noses. Abstract
