Annotation Ever since the beginning of the twenty-first century, the fairy tale has not only become a staple of the small and silver screen around the globe, it has also migrated into new media, overwhelming audiences with imaginative and spectacular retellings along the way. Indeed, modern fairy-tale adaptations, pervading contemporary popular culture, drastically subvert, shatter, and alter the public's understanding of the classic fairy tale. Because of the phenomenally increasing proliferation of fairy-tale transformations in today's "old" and "new" media, we must reflect upon the significance of the fairy tale for society and its social uses in a nuanced fashion. How, why, and for whom have fairy-tale narratives, characters, and motifs metamorphosed in recent decades? What significant intermedial and intertextual relationships exist nowadays in connection with the fairy tale? This Special Issue features eleven illuminating articles of thirteen scholars in the fields of folklore and fairy-tale studies, tackling these and other relevant questions.

Myth and Language explores the less universally accepted supposition that, particularly for the realm of literature, these two domains are necessarily interrelated. . . . Unlike previous studies of symbiosis, which have tended to neglect the importance of language, Myth and Language fully considers the influence of social context on the nature of literary language. Albert Cook begins his investigation into the relationship of myth and language with a critique of Levi-Strauss. . . .Another section traces the redefinition of the relationship of myth and language from the oral Greek culture of Homer to the development of the discrete forms of lyric poetry, philosophy, and historiography. A final section examines the necessary reliance of elementary literary forms–proverb, riddle, parable, metaphor–on the translation of mythic concerns into language. This book is a cogent argument for the dependence of literary expression on mythic formulations.

De l’engouement né des volumes de Perrault ou des Grimm à aujourd’hui, l’attrait pour le conte ne s’est jamais démenti : parce que celui-ci invite à l’émerveillement, il a donné lieu à réécritures enjouées, adaptations admiratives, mais aussi interrogations et subversions démystifiantes. Toutefois, la critique, le déplacement dans un autre genre – récit filmique, photographie, notamment – ne sont pas déliaison mais réaffirmation du lien qui nous attache à cette énigme toujours renouvelée qu’est le conte – et avec lui le plaisir que nous y trouvons. Ce volume, généreusement illustré par la photographe Dina Goldstein et dirigé par Florence Fix (université Rouen- Normandie) et Hermeline Pernoud (université Paris 3-Sorbonne Nouvelle), réunit quinze textes analysant la permanence du conte dans la modernité : un conte dans tous ses états, malmené, adapté, raillé, déplacé, mais toujours vivace et propice à un réenchantement de la lecture.

Venedig war im 18. Jahrhundert nicht nur ein Zentrum des Theatergeschehens, sondern zugleich Mittelpunkt lebendiger Theaterdiskussionen. Der sogenannte venezianische Theaterstreit mit den Protagonisten Carlo Goldoni und Carlo Gozzi erscheint in der Literatur- und Theatergeschichtsschreibung vielfach in Form einer vereinfachenden Reproduktion der Polemik. Das überwiegend kritisch-negative Gozzi-Bild korreliert mit einer einseitigen Hochschätzung Goldonis und der von ihm propagierten Theaterreform, wird dagegen Gozzi als Retter der Commedia dell ́arte verehrt, gilt Goldoni als ihr Totengräber. Die vorliegende Studie versucht, derartige Vorurteile aufzubrechen und Carlo Gozzis Fiabe teatrali als veritablen Gegenentwurf zu Goldonis Komödien und zum aufklärerischen Drama zu verstehen. Auf dem Hintergrund des italienischen Theaterkontexts im 18. Jahrhundert und der venezianischen Theaterszene der Zeit treten die Besonderheit der Märchenstücke und das Anliegen Gozzis deutlich zutage. Mit den Grundkonstituenten Märchen und Commedia dell ́arte wenden sich die Fiabe teatrali gegen ein Theater, das die Wirklichkeitsnähe betont und einen Nützlichkeitsanspruch verfolgt. Die Verbindung der wirklichkeitsfernen Elemente erfolgt in einer Art ars combinatoria, die auf Kontraststrukturen basiert und den artifiziellen Charakter unterstreicht. Damit tritt die Autonomie der theatralen Wirklichkeit hervor, und die Einbildungskraft wird zum entscheidenden Faktor. Das Märchenhafte wird allerdings zweifach an die Erfahrungswirklichkeit rückgebunden: zum einen finden sich in der Maskenrede direkte Verweise auf die nicht-theatrale Wirklichkeit, zum anderen scheinen in der Bühnenillusion Wahrheiten auf, die in der diskursiven Diskussion verborgen bleiben. So eröffnet das neue dramatische Genus der Fiabe teatrali die Möglichkeit, auf den Konstruktcharakter von Wirklichkeit hinzudeuten und die Problematik der Erkenntnis von Wahrheit in Szene zu setzen. In the eighteenth century, Venice was not only a center of theatre life but also a center for discussion about theatre. In literary and theatre history the well-known Venetian theatrical dispute, with its protagonists Carlo Goldoni and Carlo Gozzi, seem to provoke a simplistic reproduction of the polemics. A predominantly negative image of Gozzi is correlated with an appreciation of Goldoni and his dramaturgical reform, whereas while Gozzi is considered the savior of the commedia dell ́arte, Goldoni appears as ist grave-digger. This study tries to break open such prejudice, reading Gozzi ́s "Fiabe teatrali" as a veritable counterpoint to Goldoni ́s comedies and Enlightenment drama. Against the background of Italian theatre in the 18th century and contemporary Venetian theatricality, Gozzi ́s intention, as well as the special characteristics of his tales for the theatre, becomes evident. Using fairy tales and commedia dell ́arte as basic constituents for his "Fiabe teatrali", Gozzi responds to a theatre that emphasizes the reflection of everyday life and follows the concept of utility. The combination of elements are distanced from reality in a way that resembles an ars combinatoria, based on a structure of contrasts that underlines its artificial character. This displays the autonomy of theatrical reality and the importance of imagination. However, the fairy tale illusion refers back to reality in two ways: on the one hand the traditional masks comment directly current events, on the other hand theatrical illusion indirectly reveals truth that remains secret in discourse. As a new dramatic genre the "Fiabe teatrali" open the possibility to reflect on the constructed character of reality and to set on stage the problematic nature of the perception of truth.

This translation of the book ('The Historical Roots of Magic Tale') written by one of the most prominent Russian folklorists of the 20th century Vladimir Yakovlevich Propp, presents one more classical work of anthropological and folkloristical science to Slovenian researchers. The theoretical starting-points which Propp concived in his book “Morphology of the Folktale” was in this work projected on concrete material – on Russian and European folktales. By comparing folktale motifs with actual historical and anthropological sources he substantiated his structuralistical and ritualistical theoties in folk narrative research and folkloristics. S prevodom temeljnega dela enega najvidnejših raziskovalcev ljudskega pripovedništva minulega stoletja, Vladimirja Jakovljeviča Proppa, je slovenska znanstvena publicistika bogatejše še za eno klasično študijo antropološke in folkloristične vede. Knjiga Zgodovinske korenine čarobne pravljice predstavlja morfološko in ritualistično usmerjeno študijo ljudskih – predvsem ruskih – čarobnih pravljic. Teoretična izhodišča, ki jih je Propp zasnoval v Morfologiji pravljice, je tokrat uporabil ob konkretnih primerih ljudskih čarobnih pravljic, ki jih je vzporedil z zgodovinskimi in antropološkimi viri.

L’intérêt du public n’a jamais faibli pour Jacques Demy, un des cinéastes les plus singuliers de la Nouvelle Vague, auteur entre autres de Lola, Les Parapluies de Cherbourg, Les Demoiselles de Rochefort, Peau d’Âne et Une chambre en ville. Aucune monographie nouvelle, pourtant, ne lui a été consacrée en France depuis plus de vingt ans, comme s’il ne devait être l’objet que des somptueux livres d’images qui se sont multipliés sur sa vie et son œuvre. L’étude finement détaillée de l’universitaire américaine Anne E. Duggan vient combler ce manque et stimuler la réflexion en s’attachant principalement à cinq films analysés en profondeur (aussi bien Lola, Les Parapluies de Cherbourg et Peau d’Âne que les moins connus The Pied Piper et Lady Oscar) pendant que d’autres films du cinéaste sont évoqués plus rapidement. L’approche théorique d’Anne Duggan rompt radicalement avec le consensus critique établi autour de l’œuvre de Demy, puisqu’elle choisit de se placer dans le double éclairage des études sur le conte (dont elle retrouve les archétypes jusque dans Lola et dans Les Parapluies de Cherbourg) et des queer studies qui, dans la continuation des gender studies, cherchent à identifier une pratique artistique fondée sur le refus des marges et des frontières. Le livre d’Anne Duggan est une contribution majeure au renouvellement du discours critique sur Demy. C’est aussi un superbe hommage à la complexité d’une œuvre cinématographique dont on ne se lasse pas d’explorer les faces les plus secrètes.
