Abstract

The field of Asian American studies grew out of mid-twentieth century civil rights struggles, anti-war protests, and third world liberation movements. As a result, human rights issues have always been part of Asian American studies, though they've been largely peripheral to the interdiscipline. This edited collection bring Asian American studies to the center of human rights critique by engaging with "the possibilities and the limits of the stories that have circulated and the knowledge that has been produced around the broad topic of 'human rights' understood primarily as a post-1945 discourse that has profoundly affected the movements of people and relations of power across the Pacific." The collection brings together scholars from North America and Asia in order to approach the issue of human rights from both sides of the Pacific.

Abstract

The contributions to this book address a series of 'confrontations'-debates between intellectual communities, the interplay of texts and images, and the intersection of monumental architecture and physical terrain-and explore the ways in which the legacy of these encounters, and the human responses to them, conditioned cultural production in early South Asia (c. 4th-7th centuries CE). Rather than an agonistic term, the book uses 'confrontation' as a heuristic to examine historical moments within this pivotal period in which individuals and communities were confronted with new ideas and material expressions. The first half of the volume addresses the intersections of textual, material, and visual forms of cultural production by focusing on three primary modes of confrontation: the relation of inscribed texts to material media, the visual articulation of literary images and, finally, the literary interpretation and reception of built landscapes. The second part of the volume focuses on confrontations both within and between intellectual communities. The articles address the dynamics between peripheral and dominant movements in the history of Indian philosophy.

Abstract

Classifications of circulation weather systems have a long history in meteorology and climatology. Starting with manual classifications over specific regions of the globe, these tools (generally called “catalogs of synoptic types”) were restricted mainly to weather forecasting and historical climate variability studies. In the last decades, the advance of computing resources and the availability of datasets have fostered the development of fast and objective methods that process large amount of data. In recent years numerous methods of circulation type classification have been designed, showing their usefulness on a wide range of applications in scientific domains related to weather, climate, and environment. This Research Topic highlights methodological advances in circulation weather types and also their applications to different research areas. The articles included in this research topic show that circulation weather types can be used not only in Europe, where they have been always more frequent, but also applied to other regions of the world.

Abstract

Daniel Schlumberger, archaeologist and art historian, worked from 1925 to 1972 from Lebanon and Syria to Afghanistan. He revealed the depth of the impact of Greek civilization and art in the East, from the Mediterranean to India, and brought to light the greatness of the Kushan civilization. He was successively member of the service of Antiquities of Syria and Lebanon, director of the French Archaeological Delegation in Afghanistan, professor at the University of Strasbourg then director of the French Institute of Archeology in Beirut. Some of his most important writings are republished here, accompanied by a presentation and a bibliography of the researcher, an inventory of the main sites on which he has worked, all illustrated with extracts from letters from his hand, photographs and plans. Through this volume of a collection intended to present some great figures of research in the East, the French Institute of the Proche-Orient today pays tribute to one of its most eminent members.

Abstract

This book engages with the concept, true value, and function of democracy in South Asia against the background of real social conditions for the promotion of peaceful development in the region. In the book, the issue of peaceful social development is defined as the conditions under which the maintenance of social order and social development is achieved - not by violent compulsion but through the negotiation of intentions or interests among members of society. The book assesses the issue of peaceful social development and demonstrates that the maintenance of such conditions for long periods is a necessary requirement for the political, economic, and cultural development of a society and state. Chapters argue that, through the post-colonial historical trajectory of South Asia, it has become commonly understood that democracy is the better, if not the best, political system and value for that purpose. Additionally, the book claims that, while democratization and the deepening of democracy have been broadly discussed in the region, the peace that democracy is supposed to promote has been in serious danger, especially in the 21st century. A timely survey and re-evaluation of democracy and peaceful development in South Asia, this book will be of interest to academics in the field of South Asian Studies, Peace and Conflict Studies and Asian Politics and Security.

Abstract

Trade liberalisation is necessary but not sufficient to provide the conditions under which migration flows are significantly reduced. Co-ordinated measures must therefore be undertaken to promote technological catch-up, the development of physical infrastructure and investment in human capital. Against a background of sustained development accompanied by significant employment creation, the incentive to emigrate could decline. This publication explores the links between trade liberalisation and migration movements in North America and discusses the issue of whether the free circulation of persons accompany the successive stages of regional economic integration or whether it is an important objective to be achieved only once economic convergence has reached a sufficiently high level. The authors conclude that restrictions on movement are likely to continue into the future and that the lack of free movement does not constitute an obstacle to regional economic integration. Within this context, the need for balanced migration policies which take account of concerns about the economic consequences and social welfare of both sending and receiving countries will remain on the agenda for the foreseeable future.
