"Confronter les oeuvres d'Aragon et de Ponge revêt des enjeux littéraires, politiques, anthropologiques. Ces deux figures des lettres du XXe siècle, liées aux avant-gardes, de Dada et du surréalisme (Aragon) à Tel Quel (Ponge), ont partagé fugitivement, durant la période de la Résistance, l'engagement communiste. Leur divergence croissante dans l'après-guerre et l'inversion relative du prestige symbolique accordé à chacun constituent un objet d'investigation dont l'intérêt dépasse les cas respectifs. In Without Criteria, Steven Shaviro proposes and explores a philosophical fantasy: imagine a world in which Alfred North Whitehead takes the place of Martin Heidegger. What if Whitehead, instead of Heidegger, had set the agenda for postmodern thought? Heidegger asks, "Why is there something, rather than nothing?" Whitehead asks, "How is it that there is always something new?" In a world where everything from popular music to DNA is being sampled and recombined, argues Shaviro, Whitehead's question is the truly urgent one. Without Criteria is Shaviro's experiment in rethinking postmodern theory, especially the theory of aesthetics, from a point of view that hearkens back to Whitehead rather than Heidegger. In working through the ideas of Whitehead and Deleuze, Shaviro also appeals to Kant, arguing that certain aspects of Kant's thought pave the way for the philosophical "constructivism" embraced by both Whitehead and Deleuze. Kant, Whitehead, and Deleuze are not commonly grouped together, but the juxtaposition of them in Without Criteria helps to shed light on a variety of issues that are of concern to contemporary art and media practices.

The etymology of the word "author," which derives from the root of the Latin verb "augere" ("to increase"), refers to an act of creation or augmentation. As such, the word is essentially a call for expanding the pre-existing. Roland Barthes declared in his famous essay that the author is dead as "a modern figure, a product of our society." Fifty years later, the post-anthropocentric perspective of contemporary thinking and designing in the 21st century seems to emphasise the total overcoming of the author's person. But is that really the case? This instalment of "Vesper" explores the implications for authorship in our time.

Als Medien- und insbesondere Fernsehphänomen hat Harald Schmidt die TV-Kultur im deutschsprachigen Raum maßgeblich beeinflusst. So ist es etwa der Harald Schmidt Show gelungen, halbironische Sprechweisen diskursfähig zu machen, die sich bis in die Gegenwart der Social Media verfolgen lassen. Die Beiträger*innen des Bandes untersuchen vor diesem Hintergrund die »Methode Harald Schmidt«, d.h. die Unterminierung gängiger sozialer Vorstellungen bei gleichzeitiger Affirmation derselben. Die zentrale These lautet: Harald Schmidt hat grundlegende Voraussetzungen dafür geschaffen, eine weitestgehend neue Populärkultur ästhetisch wie kulturpraktisch zu etablieren.
