This open access book presents detailed findings about the ethical, legal, and social acceptance of robots in the German and European context. The key resource is the Bremen AI Delphi survey of scientists and politicians and a related population survey. The focus is on trust in robotic assistance, human willingness to use this assistance, and the expected personal well-being in human-robot interaction. Using recent data from Eurostat, the European Social Survey, and the Eurobarometer survey, the analysis is extended to Germany and the EU. The acceptance of robots in care and everyday life is viewed against their acceptance in other contexts of life and the scientific research. The book reports on how the probability of five complex future scenarios is evaluated by experts and politicians. These scenarios cover a broad range of topics, including the worst-case scenario of cutthroat competition for jobs, the wealth promise of AI, communication in human-robot interaction, robotic assistance, and ethical and legal conflicts. International economic competition alone will ensure that countries invest sustainably in the future technologies of AI and robots. But will these technologies also be accepted by the population? The book raises the core issue of how governments can gain the needed social, ethical, and user acceptance of AI and robots in everyday life. This highly topical book is of interest to researchers, professionals and policy makers working on various aspects of human-robot interaction. This is an open access book.

Im Mai 1926 erschoss in Paris ein jüdischer Emigrant aus der Ukraine, der Uhrmacher Scholem Schwarzbard, den ehemaligen Präsidenten der Ukrainischen Nationalrepublik, Symon Petljura. Siebzehn Monate später wurde Schwarzbard von einem Pariser Gericht freigesprochen, obwohl er die Tat gestanden und nicht auf mildernde Umstände plädiert hatte. Das Attentat und der Prozess, in dem die tausendfachen Morde an den Juden der Ukraine im Jahr 1919 zur Sprache kamen, erregten öffentliche Aufmerksamkeit in Frankreich und der gesamten Welt. Sie schlugen sich wesentlich auf die Beziehungen zwischen Juden und Ukrainern, den zwei größten staatenlosen nationalen Minderheiten Europas, nieder.Der Band vereint neu entdeckte Archivalien in acht Sprachen sowie journalistische Beiträge aus französischen, deutschen, ukrainischen, russischen, hebräischen, jiddischen und amerikanischen Zeitungen und Zeitschriften. Damit wird diese historische Episode aus zahlreichen Perspektiven beleuchtet. Eine ausführliche Einleitung und ein umfassender Anmerkungsapparat setzen diese komplizierte und vielschichtige Geschichte in ihren historischen Kontext und helfen Lesern den Ablauf der Geschehnisse und deren Bedeutung für die unterschiedlichen Gruppen zu verstehen, die wesentlichen Anteil an ihnen hatten.

Trata das idéias e vivências da loucura presentes na cidade do Rio de Janeiro entre 1830 e 1930, período em que foi apropriada e transformada pelos alienistas em doença mental. Por meio da narrativa das várias tramas de personagens famosos por sua vesânia e aprisionados nas malhas da doença mental, a autora delineia um panorama histórico da loucura, passando pela análise das condições de enclausuramento às quais grande parte dos indivíduos suspeitos e/ou diagnosticados como doentes mentais ficariam sujeitos a partir da criação do Hospício de Pedro II. Fundamental para leigos e acadêmicos, assinala o momento em que os médicos brasileiros começariam a reivindicar para si a responsabilidade sobre a loucura, defendendo a necessidade da construção de hospícios onde os alienados mentais pudessem ser recolhidos e tratados convenientemente.
